Steve Simonsen exercised his penalty demons as North End defeated Carlisle United 3-1 on penalties at Brunton Park to progress through to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The North End keeper saved Paddy Madden's effort to allow David Buchanan to slam home the winning penalty and send North End through to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against the Cumbrians.

It was the fourth tie in a row of North End's games in this competition that ended this way, winning three of them, this time against a side who played the last ten minutes with ten men.

The Lilywhites got off to a blistering start for the third game in succession, with Chris Beardsley grabbing his first goal in PNE colours, gaining the luck his hard work in recent games has deserved, but John-Paul McGovern equalised midway through the second period before the drama of the spot kicks.

The play began, as become the norm for PNE, at a high tempo with the Lilwyhites breaking down the right hand side. Andy Procter did  well before feeding the ball into Graham Cummins. His ball in found David Amoo who blasted across goal, the ball hitting the heel of Beardsley and wrong-footing young debutant goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, ending up nestling in the bottom right hand corner.

The home side responded positively to the early set back and former North End loanee Jake Jervis was played through on goal by John-Paul McGovern on 12 minutes, but he tried to loft the ball over Steve Simonsen, but also cleared the bar with his effort.

Keith Keane was needed to make a strong block to deny Matty Robson a chot on goal in a left hand channel just before the half hour mark, but as the half drew to a close the better chances were beginning to fall to North End.

Firstly Bailey Wright was only a foot or so over the cross bar with a header from Keith Keane’s left wing cross and then with four minutes left in the half David Amoo produced a great run that dissected the Blues defence, before sliding across goal for Beardsley to convert, however, this time the linesman’s flag went up to deny him and PNE a second of the game.

Five minutes after the interval a well-worked quick corner saw Berrett deliver to the six yard box where Matty Robson was unmarked and headed downwards seemingly for the equaliser, but a superb save by Simonsen saw the keeper grab hold of the header to keep North End ahead.

The home side had much the better of the opening 20 minutes of the second period, putting a lot of pressure on the North End backline and they drew level on 68 minutes. A deep ball into the box was cleared, but only as far as John-Paul McGovern who hit a volley from 22 yards into the bottom right hand corner.

North End started to look dangerous on the counter as the game wore on with the pace of Amoo and substitute Jeffrey Monakana looking threats down the flanks, but a well-worked free kick saw Chantler strike a 25 yard effort just wide of the right hand upright.

Then some drama on 83 minutes as Lee Noble was given a straight red card for a terrible over the boot challenge on sub Nicky Wroe; referee Jez Simpson immediately went for the card and had no hesitation in sending off the Carlisle midfield man.

In the 89th minute Akpo Sodje left the cross bar shaking after a brilliant North End move down the left as Monakana was fed by Wroe in a left hand channel and he cleverly pulled the ball back for Sodje to smash the ball in from 12 yards out but rattled the bar.

Five minutes of stoppage time were added on an in the 94th minute Jervis hit the outside of the post after a header from McGovern's corner, but the game was to go to penalties.

John Paul McGovern scored the first, before Nicky Wroe found the bottom right hand corner, Jake Jervis fired over whilst skipper Bailey Wright saw his effort saved.

James Berrett repeated Jervis' miss but Sodje converted from 12 yards. Simonsen then denied Paddy Madden with a fine save low to his right before Buchanan slammed home a left footed effort into the top right hand corner to send North End through.
