AFC Bournemouth 2 PNE 3

A hat-trick from Simon Makienok saw North End knock out Premier League AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, and send themselves through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the first time in 14 years.

Makienok opened the scoring just 11 minutes in; his initial chest down was smashed goalwards by Ben Pringle, only for Nathan Ake to clear off the line only as far the big Dane who drilled a shot back through the legs of Adam Federici and into the net for his first competitive goal in PNE colours.

Bournemouth were level on 53 minutes when Lewis Grabban converted a penalty after a harsh award of a penalty for a handball, after a free kick was driven at a PNE wall from 20 yards and with 15 minutes left Dan Gosling poked home Lewis Grabban’s right wing cross to put them in front.

However, the drama wasn’t over and with five minutes to go Makienok did it again, this time rising in the box to head Chris Humphrey’s excellent cross into the top left hand corner from the penalty spot to take the game into extra-time for the second year in succession in a third round tie between the two sides.

The extra periods were cagey affairs, but with eight minutes to go the great Dane put North End back in front, completing his hat-trick, latching onto a flick from Doyle and lifting the ball over Federici from 12 yards out and the yellows held on for a famous win.

It was all change for both sides, with the Cherries altering all 11 from their loss to Manchester City, whilst Greg Cunningham was the only PNE survivor from the trip to Brentford the previous weekend.

The opener was the first chance of the game for either side. John Welsh battled for the ball in the middle of the park and fed it wide to Chris Humphrey. The wing back raced down the touchline before delivering a deep cross to Makienok. The No.9 could have headed for goal, but chose to perfectly weight a chest down for Pringle. He drilled a left footed effort towards the bottom right hand corner only for Chelsea loanee Ake to stretch out a leg to block the effort. The ball ricocheted back for the big striker, making only his second start, and he fired right-footed under the home side’s Aussie keeper and into the net.

The home side were always a threat with their pace, but so were the yellows and another Pringle cross was chested down by Makienok just before the half hour mark. This time it was for the onrushing Ben Pearson, but his shot was straight at Federici, when if anywhere else it had a good chance of being number two.

The hosts finally tested Chris Maxwell on 31 minutes. Brad Smith, purchased from Liverpool for over £5m in the summer, exchanged a one-two with Benik Afobe before getting into the left hand side of the box and firing goalwards. The back leg of the former Fleetwood keeper got a touch and took it wide for a corner.

Right on half-time the visitors had another good chance to double their advantage. Once again it was Makienok who this time put pressure on Marc Wilson down the left hand side and forced space to pull the ball across; again it fell to Ben Pearson only for his shot to be deflected wide for a corner by Ake.

Eddie Howe changed formation and personnel at the break to 4-4-2 with young Lys Mousset added to the attacking options, but it was PNE on the break who had the first chance, Makienok and Daniel Johnson with a positive one-two allowing the latter to shoot goalwards, the ball coming off Tyrone Mings for a corner – the defender making his first start after 13 months on the sidelines following his move to the Vitality Stadium from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2015.

But in the 53rd minute the home side were awarded a controversial penalty when a Gradel free kick from the edge of the box was drilled ay the PNE wall, who could do nothing about it, but referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot for handball.

Lewis Grabban sent Chris Maxwell the wrong way from the spot, but the yellow felt highly-aggrieved the ball being played at them at such speed that they had little time to do anything about it.

Mid-way through the second half Simon Grayson made his first change, brining on Tom Clarke for Greg Cunningham in a switch to 4-4-1-1 to match the home side. However, his first action was to watch Maxwell make a fine save to tip Brad Smith’s dipping shot out from under the bar and away for a corner, after a shot from 25 yards.

But the home side took the lead with exactly 30 minutes gone in the second half. Lewis Grabban used his pace to race down the right hand side, got the byline and pulled the ball back for Cherries skipper Dan Gosling to poke home from close range.

Chris Humphrey twice brought the best out of Federici as he raced onto Pearson’s ball out to the right as the game entered the final ten minutes, the Jamaican drilling goalwards from a tight angle, making the Australian keeper make two smart saves with his legs.

But with five minutes to go it was all-square once again. A sustained period of PNE pressure saw the ball come out to Humphrey again on the right wing and this time he delivered a sweet cross in and Simon Makienok left Federici flat-footed, heading into the top left hand corner from 12 yards outs.

In the first of four minutes added on the Lilywhites almost won it. Pringle delivered from the left and Huntington powered a header towards the bottom left hand corner and Federici made a superb save at full stretch. The ball came back out to Pringle and he crossed beautifully again but Doyle got in the way of Makienok, in a great position to otherwise convert for a hat-trick.

This was the last meaningful action of the 90 minutes, meaning an extra 30 minutes would be added to try and find a winner and a place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the second year in a row between the two sides.

Max Gradel had the first chance of the added periods, six minutes into the first, driving in from the left and forcing Maxwell into an excellent save low to his right, to push the ball round the post for a corner.

The second half of the extra-time saw North End start on the front foot, Callum Robinson forcing a corner with a blocked shot from the edge of the box after some good midfield play involving Ben Pearson once again – just before the former Manchester United man went into the referee’s book for a foul on Grabban stopping an attack with a slightly late tackle in the centre circle.

But with eight minutes to go North End were in front as the great Dane completed his hat-trick. Brilliant play down the right saw Pearson again involved, laying the ball back to Clarke. He crossed to the penalty spot to where Doyle flicked the ball through for Makienok to stretch and lift the ball over Federici; the keeper getting a touch on the ball but only able to help it into the net – the forward running to celebrate with the 293 North End fans who had travelled the huge distance to the south coast to support their team.

There was two and a half minutes left and North End were still pressing, Robinson and Makienok both going close to adding a fourth from the left hand corner of the penalty area only for the Bournemouth defence to get two vital blocks in.

Two more minutes were added on by the officials at the end of the 120, but the Mak heald the ball in the final third of the Bournemouth end to earn his side victory.
