A hat-trick from Simon Makienok saw North End knock out Premier League AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, and send themselves through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the first time in 14 years.
Makienok opened the scoring just 11 minutes in; his initial chest down was smashed goalwards by Ben Pringle, only for Nathan Ake to clear off the line only as far the big Dane who drilled a shot back through the legs of Adam Federici and into the net for his first competitive goal in PNE colours.
Bournemouth were level on 53 minutes when Lewis Grabban converted a penalty after a harsh award of a penalty for a handball, after a free kick was driven at a PNE wall from 20 yards and with 15 minutes left Dan Gosling poked home Lewis Grabban’s right wing cross to put them in front.
However, the drama wasn’t over and with five minutes to go Makienok did it again, this time rising in the box to head Chris Humphrey’s excellent cross into the top left hand corner from the penalty spot to take the game into extra-time for the second year in succession in a third round tie between the two sides.
The extra periods were cagey affairs, but with eight minutes to go the great Dane put North End back in front, completing his hat-trick, latching onto a flick from Doyle and lifting the ball over Federici from 12 yards out and the yellows held on for a famous win.
It was all change for both sides, with the Cherries altering all 11 from their loss to Manchester City, whilst Greg Cunningham was the only PNE survivor from the trip to Brentford the previous weekend.

The back leg of the former Fleetwood keeper got a touch and took it wide for a corner.
Right on half-time the visitors had another good chance to double their advantage. Once again it was Makienok who this time put pressure on Marc Wilson down the left hand side and forced space to pull the ball across; again it fell to Ben Pearson only for his shot to be deflected wide for a corner by Ake.
Eddie Howe changed formation and personnel at the break to 4-4-2 with young Lys Mousset added to the attacking options, but it was PNE on the break who had the first chance, Makienok and Daniel Johnson with a positive one-two allowing the latter to shoot goalwards, the ball coming off Tyrone Mings for a corner – the defender making his first start after 13 months on the sidelines following his move to the Vitality Stadium from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2015.
