Aiden McGeady Lauds Deepdale Atmosphere

7 January 2017

Aiden McGeady praised the North End fans after North End were narrowly pipped to the post by Premier League Arsenal.

The experienced winger would have been all too familiar with tonight's occasion having played in plenty of high-profile games himself throughout his career.

However, it was still an experience that McGeady savoured when he spoke to the club's official media channel following the 2-1 defeat to heavyweights Arsenal

"It was probably the best atmosphere I've played in at Deepdale," he said. "It was pretty much a full house and our fans were very vocal right from the kick-off. The fans will go home fairly pleased from what they've seen.

"Games like that don't come around very often against a very good Arsenal team. Live on tv, full house so it will stand some of the young lads in good stead."

A league and 16 places separated the sides before the game, but it was North End who took the initiative in the first-half with Callum Robinson giving PNE a deserved lead in the seventh minute.

The momentum was well and truly in North End's corner for the first 45 minutes, only for the Gunners to peg the Lilywhites back inside the first minute of the second-half through Aaron Ramsey.

McGeady, who was instrumental in the build-up to PNE's goal was left to rue that early goal when he spoke to PNEPlayerHD after the game.

"We were the better side first-half and if we'd have taken our chances we could have been dead and buried by half-time," said McGeady after the full-time whistle.

"Maybe we invited the pressure which they put us under in the second-half and we didn't attack in the way in which we did in the first-half, but Arsenal are a quality side and we can't have any complaints. We were unlucky at the end with the goal but it was a pretty even game.

"You knew there was going to be a reaction after half-time and we had to be focused for the full game against these teams and one small mistake, they can punish you."

"We're a team full of potential," continued the Irish International. "We're not the finished article but a few of the draws we've had in the last couple of months, if you turn them into wins we're right in the mix of the play-offs and that just shows the fine margins."
