Morecambe 1 PNE 4

26 July 2016

A brace from Callum Robinson, one from Jordan Hugill and a screamer from Ben Pringle, gave the Lilywhites a 4-1 win over Morecambe in their latest pre-season game.

Robinson opened the scoring when he side-footed Jordan Hugill's cross home inside the six yard box and Pringle double the lead before half-time, his first goal for the club an arrow into the top right corner from 20 yards.

Hugill made it three from close range with 20 minutes left and Callum Robinson wrapped things up with a low effort from just inside the box, the third and fourth goals sandwiching a breakaway strike by Tom Barkhuizen for the home side.

A lot of Simon Grayson's squad got 90 minutes under their belt, but the home side started brightly, still probably with their ears ringing from their 6-2 defeat at FC Halifax Town the previous Saturday.

Aaron Wildig looked lively early on, firstly forcing Chris Maxwell into a smart save from his goalbound shot from a right hand channel and then the same man snatched at a chance on the other side of the penalty area after through ball by Andy Fleming.

However, North End came into the game and as the half progressed and they went ahead after 23 minutes. Ben Pringle sent Jordan Hugill down the right flank; the No.25 got the byline and pulled the ball back for an onrushing Robinson to slide home inside the six-yard box.

Robinson was inches away from doubling his and the visitors' tally shortly after, his 25-yard free kick in a left hand channel heading over the wall, but into the side netting with keeper Barry Roche beaten.

With ten minutes to go before the break Pringle collected the ball in the middle of the park, feigned to shoot and slipped the ball into Eoin Doyle in a right channel, he drilled a shot across goal, just wide of left hand upright with Roche beaten.

But it was two with seven minutes to go in the half as Pringle picked up a ball wom by fellow 'Ben' Peasron, swivelled and sent an arrow of a shot into the top right corner off the post from 25 yards out.

Chris Humphrey, Alan Browne and a returning Tommy Spurr came on at half-time and Robinson was again close to a second just three minutes into the second period after collecting a Humphrey pull back. His initial shot was well saved by Roche, he miss hit a second and then from his third bite of the cherry he found the side-netting.

Paul Huntington's last action of the night came in the 62nd minute, when his bullet flick header from Robinson's left wing corner was acrobatically pushed away by Roche.

The third goal came on 71 minutes, with Robinson again involved. This time he drove down the left, got to the byline and Hugill powered home a header from the cross into the six yard box.

Jim Bentley's side pulled a gopal back when Barkhuizen collected a through ball from Paul Mullin to run clean through and powered a shot past Maxwell from just inside the box, but North End added a fourth with nine minutes left.

This time Clive Smith, on at right back for Liam Grimshaw, drove in from the right, played the ball into Robinson 25 yards out, he danced towards the box, saw an opening and fired hard and low into the bottom left hand corner to put the icing on the cake of another positive pre-season display from Simon Grayson's men.
