Six Premier League appearances for Roberto Martinez’s Everton before the end of October – he was establishing himself as a top flight player.
But the England U21 defender suffered a blow, a knee injury that would keep him out of action for a year.
But now he is back and he is establishing himself again, here at Deepdale, and is thoroughly enjoying every minute of being back out on the pitch and playing regular first team football.
The Scouser signed for Simon Grayson’[s squad the day before the closure of the transfer window and went straight into the team for the away game at Cardiff City. That wasn’t a night to remember for the 22-year-old, but it was an important milestone.
The only football he had played since making his return was for David Unsworth’s U23’s at Goodison Park and therefore getting out on the pitch with three points at stake at the end of the 90 minutes was something he needed and relished; as he explained when he sat down with The One And Only at Springfields earlier this week.
“It’s nice to have that feeling of playing,” said the new PNE No.6. “Knowing that you have a game coming up and the feeling after a game. There’s nothing better. The lads have helped me settle in and we’ve got a couple of good results.
“It was difficult at the time [when he was injured]. Especially the first couple of months. Because it was quite serious it does bring you down quite a lot. Obviously, the physios and all the lads at Everton helped me get through that, but it’s just nice to be back and for that to be in the past.
“One of the worst things about it was knowing that you’d be coming in and doing the same thing over and over again for so long. To know that it is going to be with you for the next year or so, that was mentally tough.
“I suppose that when you get into it, you get to the stage where you start jogging again, then you get more eager and that enthusiasm back. It gets more exciting, it’s like learning to play football again. Hitting those little markers, I should be doing this in four weeks, this in six and that does put a smile on your face, especially when you’re outside kicking a ball again.
“It was an easy decision [to come to PNE] and the fact that I’ve come in and gone straight into the first team, playing the first three matches has been a real boost. I couldn’t have asked for anything else. It’s close to home as well; we’ve got results, so I couldn’t ask for anything more to be honest.”
