Simon Grayson On ‘A Fantastic Team Performance’

20 August 2016

Manager Simon Grayson was delighted with his side’s performance as they collected their first three points of the season.

“Humphrey and Spurr gave us something on the flanks, so there were a lot of positives that we need to build on in the next couple of games before the international break,” he added.

“John Welsh was very productive in the middle of the pitch today, keeping things ticking over and then with the quality of Gally and threat of the likes Becks and Callum up front it was all positive.

The four changes made by Simon, gave the team an experienced spine and he felt this played a big part in the win: “We looked at it and we felt it was to have different options to come into the team. I spoke with Snods [Glynn Snodin] and Tommo [Steve Thompson] and said I was going to go with a team with more experience to give us a bit of energy and go back to basics.

“That performance today was very much like we were last year. A few people have been questioning us over the last few weeks, but that will quieten them down for a few days.”

“Today we made a few changes and they were all on the front foot and it worked. The players who came in showed they have been ready and waiting for their chance and they all contributed to a fantastic team performance.

His side started as they meant to go on and had chances to go ahead from the off after harrying and hassling the home side with a strong pressing game: “You want your team to press from the start in any game,” continued the PNE boss. “That was what we asked against Reading and it didn’t prove the case.

“Today if you watched us, you certainly thought that is the Preston North End from last year – we were hard to beat, we were on the front foot, we passed it with a purpose, we had runners and workers and we thoroughly deserved the win against a strong QPR team.”

After the game the gaffer spoke to PNE PlayerHD and said: “We’ve not been too far away from getting points on the board for the last few games. We have been disappointed in the start, but we took a lot of positives from the game against Derby on Tuesday night – we certainly deserved something.

Beckford got them going in the first half, poking home Paul Gallagher’s 15 yard shot and then Robinson converted a right wing cross from his fellow forward to give them a 2-0 triumph.

Goals from his strike duo of Jermaine Beckford and Callum Robinson gave the yellows the win at Loftus Road, as they put in a team performance to out play Jimmy Flody Hasselbaink’s R’s.
