Simon Grayson Reflects On Summer Recruitment

31 August 2016

As the summer transfer window draws to a close, manager Simon Grayson reflects on a busy period for PNE.

North End increased the tally of summer recruits to ten with three deadline day signings on Wednesday.

Marnick Vermijl signed a three-year deal at Deepdale, while defender Alex Baptiste and winger Aiden McGeady joined on season-long loans from Middlesbrough and Everton respectively.

Speaking about the club's deadline day signings, the gaffer said: "Over the last few weeks we have looked at a lot of options and we've decided that Marnick was a player we enjoyed working with.

"He's young, hungry and versatile. He can play right back, right wing back, and the right side of midfield with pace and we know what we are getting with him.

"We will be looking to work with him and develop him and I think he makes the squad stronger.

"Alex Baptiste is another versatile player, he can play at centre back or right back and he has that experience of many games under his belt.

"I signed him for Blackpool a few years ago and he's gone on to have a great career and he's another player we are delighted to have signed."

Aiden McGeady was PNE's tenth signing of the summer window, and the PNE boss was delighted to secure the Irishman's services for the season.

"It's a fantastic signing for us obviously, he's played at the highest level, he's a Republic of Ireland international, and he's a player who has got fantastic ability.

"He's got pace, good feet, good delivery, so I think he is really good signing for us, a real coup given his pedigree and the clubs that he has played for previously.

"I think he can provide opportunities for the strikers but also I think he will be able to do something out of nothing. He can go past somebody and make things happen which is something that I have talked about in the last few weeks.

"When the opportunity came along for us to sign him it was an opportunity for us to move quickly and we decided to do that so it's fantastic for us all."

Looking back on the summer recruitment as a whole, the gaffer is pleased with the squad he now has at his disposal for the 2016/17 season.

"I think we have good options all over the pitch now. We are strong in the middle, we have a bit of pace about us now with Marnick and Chris Humphrey on the right, Ben Pringle's cleverness and McGeady as well, then we have Callum Robinson too so we've got some good options available to us now.

"There's been a lot of work going into all of these deals, people can get a little bit impatient but we said all along we have been working hard behind the scenes to get these deals done and they have all come to fruition now.

"We've got good contacts, to get players in from Middlesbrough and Everton who are Premier League clubs and Sheffield Wednesday who are a top Championship club shows the market we are looking at.

"People just tend to remember what has happened in the last 24 to 48 hours because that's the nature of the transfer window but the number of players we have brought in is now double figures.
