Wright Proud of Aussies

31 May 2016

Depsite falling to defeat against England on Friday night, Bailey Wright and his teammates have plenty of positives to take from the game.

The three lions came out 3-1 winners at the Stadium of Light, but a strong performance from the Aussies has left the Socceroos with a sense of pride after taking on Roy Hodgson's side.

North End defender Wright was full of praise for his Australia teammates after the game, in which the 23-year-old played the full 90 minutes.

"There's plenty of positives to take, I think we can take a lot of confidence from that game.

"We definitely played the way we knew we could, we've done that against a lot of teams throughout our World Cup qualifying capagin, and I think we did it well against England as well.

"I think we were a bit unlucky, we maybe didn't get the rub of the green, but we are very confident and proud of how we did."

Australia went behind early on, England youngster Marcus Rashford scoring on his debut with his first touch of the game, but Wright has been expecting a tough test from the start.

Speaking of Rashford, the Melbourne-born defender said: "It's his debut and the headlines were there for him, he took it well, it took a deflection but fair play to him because he finished it nicely.

"We always knew it was going to be difficult for us, when you play against good players you are going to concede goals, that's football.

"When you are playing against top players they are going to cause you problems and take their chances when they come so we knew we would have to score goals to get antying from this game.

"I think we created enough we just didn't get that little bit of luck that sometimes you need but we are happy with how we did even though is wasn't what we wanted."

Wright has become an important part of Ange Postecoglou's team, and the PNE Academy graduate has enjoyed the step up to the international stage.

"I wouldn't say it was comfortable but you back your own ability and you know you are good enough, and you know the lads that you are out there with are also good enough.

"Obviously it's 11 against 11, regardless of where everyone plays. Obviously you have a lot of the England players playing every week in the Premier League, they are top players but some people may not have been sure about players in our team but I'm sure they will be now.

"It doesn't matter what level you play at, you've got to back yourself and back your teammates and on another day maybe we would have won that we were just a bit unlucky.

"It's nice because theses are players that you've watched and you want to play against them and you want to prove that you're good enough the play them and be at that level, and when you get that chance it's nice and you enjoy it."

The game at in the north east was England's penultimate warm up match ahead of the 2016 European Championships, and Wright admits he will be looking out for the three lions in the tournament this summer.

"I live in England, I have lived here seven years so I would like to see them do well, there's still a lot of work to do, they know that, everyone is the same that's part of the preparations for the Euros for every team.

"They've got a good squad, some good young players in the team mixed with experience.

"I would like to see them do well, it's too early to tell now, when the tournament starts we will all have a good indication of how they are going to do.

"Part of my family are English and I have lived here a good chunk of my life obviously when I step out on that pitch my main focus is to beat them but I would like to see them do well in the tournament and it would be nice to see a buzz around England as well."

But for now, Bailey's focus is on the Socceroo's final two friendlies of the summer against Greece back in Australia.

"We have two friendlies against Greece now in Sydney and then Melbourne, two big occasions, good crowds and another opportunity to represent my country and give it my best."
