Bailey Wright Signs New Two Year Deal

13 July 2015

North End’s longest-serving player, Bailey Wright, has extended his stay at Deepdale until at least the summer of 2017.

The Australian international central defender has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal with the Lilywhites, effective immediately.

The No.6 made his debut under Darren Ferguson in August 2010, having joined as a scholar with the youth team back in 2009 and has gone on to make almost 150 first team appearances.

He also made his debut for the full Australian squad last season, scoring on debut at Fulham’s Craven Cottage.

Manager Simon Grayson was delighted another of his Wembley heroes had committed their future to the Club.

He said: “Bailey had a clause in his contract that we activated at the end of last season extending his stay, however, we were keen to do a new deal and I am delighted he has signed.

“I have seen Bailey develop as a player since I arrived at the Club and with a full pre-season under his belt we look forward to even more from him in the Championship.”

The Victoria-born defender, who only turns 23 later this month, was equally pleased to have signed. He added: "I'm delighted to extend my time here, I've been here for six years now and I'm looking forward to making that eight at least.

"There's been some ups and downs but it's great to see the last few seasons we're certainly on the up obviously with the promotion last year.

"We're all looking forward to Championship football now and the challenge that lies ahead and it's nice to be a part of it and give it a good go and to know I will be here for a few more years."

And the 22-year-old was pleased to join a long list of current players who have committed their future to the Club this summer, and feels it bodes well for the season ahead.

"We had a great bunch of boys here last year, and it's very much the same this year and the Club's done well to keep a lot of people and there's people signing new contracts and we've made loans from last year permanent so it'a a great bunch of boys.

"We've got a good squad and we've got a good feel about the place with the boys we've got, we want to win games and win football matches, no matter what league we are in.

"I'm sure there will still be some new faces to come but I'm delighted with how things are going and how everyone's enjoying pre-season and looking forward to the season ahead."

With the contract now signed, Wright can now focus on the challenge of competing in the Championship and it's a challenge the Aussie defender is relishing.

"The beauty of being a footballer is to test yourselves against better teams, in better leagues, and especially here in England you've got that possibility to climb up the leagues and play against big teams.

"Obviously we had a good season last year, and went up the best way possible through the Play-Offs and now we are looking to prove ourselves back in the Championship.

"We don't want to just be one of those teams that's there just for the season, we want to establish ourselves back in the Championship, like the Club was and there's no reason why we can't.

"Obviously I had a slight taste of it four years ago and it was nice to be involved in the Championship but we didn't do very well that season. You want to experience that Championship in a good season and that's by winning games and that's what we want to do this season."
