5 March 2014

Fans were out in force on Thursday to witness The Brindle Brass Band pull down the curtain on a day that celebrated the life of Sir Tom Finney.

The band, who regularly played at Deepdale during Sir Tom Finney’s era, played classics such as ‘Margie’ as followers flocked to the Sir Tom Finney Splash to hear the brass sound play outside the stadium.

After their set, the band spoke to PNE.Com and were privileged to play a part in such a momentous occasion in Preston’s history.

“We’re a traditional brass band. We don’t gain anything from it financially, but it’s a great hobby of ours,” said a spokesperson.

“The bands connection with PNE goes back many years, and we use to come here every fortnight and watch Tom play.

“To play here now, 50 odd years later with Sir Tom’s family members present was a great privilege, and I hope we finished the day off well for them.

“It’s not been a pleasant day for the family, but we wish them all the best, and brass band is such a lovely way to end the day.”

The band were also in attendance at Deepdale on Thursday afternoon, were thousands gathered to see the cortege before going into the stadium to see the service being aired live on the big screen.

“There was thousands of people in the stadium. The atmosphere was brilliant and the applause was never ending,” they continued.

“It was a wonderful day celebrating the life of a fantastic man and an unbelievable chap.”
