Cunningham Completes Permanent Move

27 July 2015

Greg Cunningham has become Preston North End’s fourth summer signing, agreeing a two-year deal, moving from Bristol City to Deepdale for an undisclosed fee.

The Republic of Ireland international defender made 32 appearances in the Robins’ League One title-winning team in 2014/15, but joins the Lilywhites until at least the summer of 2017.

Cunningham, 24, started his career at Manchester City, before loan spells in the East Midlands with both Leicester City and Nottingham Forest preceded a £650,000 move to the south west to join Bristol City.

Manager Simon Grayson has been looking to bolster his defence following the summer departures of Scott Wiseman, David Buchanan and Scott Laird and he admitted his delight at concluding the arrival.

The North End boss said: “What you find with Greg is that he is a really good age, but he is experienced as well. He has played for some good clubs, big clubs, knows the Championship and was part of a winning mentality at Bristol City last year.

“We are very pleased to have got him; he’s desperate to do well for Preston North End and try and get back into the Ireland squad and if he does that, hopefully it means we are doing well.

Whilst the Galway-born man was looking forward to a new challenge, adding: “I had a year left on my contract at Bristol City, but with my football being limited last year I was looking to get out and get games and when the gaffer and Preston showed an interest I came back early from Portugal and I am now delighted to have signed for the next two years.”
