Preston North End’s award winning matchday programme features exclusive interviews with Aussie pair Tim Cahill and Ange Postecoglou in the Oldham Athletic edition.
The One And Only wanted the inside scoop on our very own Socceroo Bailey Wright’s international progress, and who better to speak to than the country’s greatest ever player and their current manager.
And the news is all good for PNE’s No.6, with the duo full of plaudits for his showing over the summer.
“Bailey is definitely made for English football because he can mix it with the best of them and at the same time he can get the ball down and play,” said Cahill, from the New York Red Bulls training facility in New Jersey.
“I love his no nonsense attitude at the back and there is not many people who want to go up against Bailey in the tackle because he is very strong.
“I like the fact that he can get the ball down and spray it and make some great passes so it is a good happy medium.
“England is the place where every kid wants to be.
“It is the same with Jason Davidson [WBA] when I sat down and talked to him about his next move; you need to play in England, you need to be visual and you need to be learning your trade in the hardest place,
regardless if it is first, second, Premier League, it is the hardest competition in the world purely because of the competitiveness and the level.
“I found Bailey’s character out very early, the good thing about him is he is a good hard centre back, but very humble with the way he carries himself and he is respectful.
“It is all about work ethic and that is probably one of the biggest things we spoke about when we were in camp.
“He needs to get games under his belt, the only way he is going to become better is learning his trade, and at the same time his drive within himself is pretty special because he is a family orientated guy and he has got all the right attributes to make it as a footballer.
“I’d say that he is half way there because he is playing for a massive Club and it is good to see a footballer who is just focused on working hard and putting himself in the right position for the manager to pick him and for Clubs to look at him.”
But the praise was not all one sided, Wright nominating Cahill’s stunning volley as his goal of the tournament.
“I was actually warming up at the other end of the pitch and we were just so low and then high so quickly because we’d just conceded, and me and a couple of the boys were warming up behind the goal,” said Bailey.
"Then we kicked off and Ryan McGowan put a ball in, me and a few of the subs just looked at each other and the stadium just erupted, you couldn’t even hear each other.
“For me it was goal of the tournament, but I don’t think it even got up there in the end which is a bit of a strange one, but yeah it was a pretty special moment.”
Cahill was also full of praise for another hero in the eyes of many associated with Preston North End – David Moyes.
The midfielder continued: “It was the best eight years of my life playing under David Moyes for a massive Club and sharing the ups and downs – more ups than downs really.
“He was the one who instigated the signings of me, Mikel Arteta and all these players.
“Before I got there we were fighting relegation, and the transformation with the players that the boss signed and the vision that he had for making a core group, we turned into a group that were hard workers and at the same time finished in respectable places and we done some great things there.”
