Fred Else Passes Away

20 July 2015

Preston North End are saddened to learn that former goalkeeper Fred Else has passed away, aged 82.

Fred died on Monday morning, in Barrow, after some months of illness.

Fred, a real gentleman, on and off the pitch, was regarded by many as the best uncapped goalkeeper of his era; though he did play for the England ‘B’ team.

Fred’s professional career began when he signed for Preston North End in 1953, making his debut for North End on 6th March 1954 in a 4-0 win over Manchester City.

Due to competition from George Thompson, Else was limited to 14 games over three seasons, but once he established himself in the side, Fred was virtually an ever-present for the Lilywhites and went on to make 238 appearances for PNE during the 1950s in the top flight of English football.

Fred always maintained that it had been an honour and a privilege to play in the same team as Sir Tom Finney.
Soon after Sir Tom retired, Fred left Deepdale, going on to give Blackburn Rovers five seasons of good service before joining Barrow AFC.

Fred took up teaching, and on retirement had a number of years living out in Cyprus.
He had actively supported the Preston North End Former Players’ Association since its inception in 1998.

Fred will be sorely missed by his many friends, family and former colleagues. Our sincere condolences go out to his widow, Marjorie and his family.
