Gregan & Spavin Named All-Time CMs

26 July 2013

Sean Gregan and Alan Spavin have won the right to become part of the Club's All-time XI, after they secured the most votes in the central midfield pairing poll.

The duo fought off competition from Paul McKenna, Mark Rankine and Nobby Lawton to take their places alongside Alan Kelly Snr, Graham Alexander, Ryan Kidd, Mark Lawrenson, Joe Marston, Sir Tom Finney and David Eyres in the team.

Gregan, who played a massive 255 games for Preston in a six year stint at Deepdale, bagged the majority of the votes and affirmed his status as a fans’ favourite at the Club.

Spavin, meanwhile, came a close second in the poll – though after over 400 league games for North End it’s no surprise he finished in the top two.

Below are the results of the ‘Fans’ All-time XI’ central midfield poll as voted for over the seven days:

Sean Gregan           44%
Alan Spavin              21%
Paul McKenna         17%
Other                         18%

Over the next six days, we go in search of the final element of the XI: two strikers. And as always, it’s up to you, the fans, to decide who will receive the honour! So, which two frontmen will spearhead the team?

Tommy Thompson played a marvellous six years for PNE as an inside-forward, and finished top scorer in his first two seasons at the Club with a combined total of 53 strikes.

Alex Dawson is another one to consider. The Scot signed for Preston in 1961 and was leading scorer at the Club in four of his five seasons. In total he bagged 114 goals in 197 games for the Lilywhites.

Youth academy graduate Alex Bruce will surely be a popular choice. The striker enjoyed two separate spells at Deepdale, scoring 157 goals for the Club – coming close to Sir Tom Finney’s record.

Before his premature retirement through injury, Michael Elwiss was one of the most feared North End forwards of all time. Partnering the aforementioned Bruce, the duo led the Club to promotion in 1977/78.

Another former North End forward who will no doubt grab his fair share of votes is John Thomas. The ex-Everton trainee had an impressive strike rate at PNE, scoring over 40 goals in around 100 appearances.

However, none of the above are guaranteed a place in PNE’s ‘Fans’ All-time XI’ without your vote!

The poll will end on Thursday 1st August, meaning the full XI will be complete in time to be announced on Friday – the day before Preston’s match against Wolves on the opening day of the League One season.
