Preston Community Project Aims To Paint A Brighter Future

20 January 2015

PNE are throwing their support behind a Preston based community centre which is hoping to paint a brighter future after reaching the final of a national competition.

The Farringdon Park Community Centre, based in Thirlmere Road, is one of four finalists competing for the makeover prize in the Johnstone’s Paint Community Spirit campaign.

And now the centre is hoping to come out on top in a public vote to win the competition which has been run in conjunction with the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Community projects around the UK were invited to submit applications to the competition, with the winner receiving a redecoration of their facility.

More than 50 entries from projects around the UK were received, with a judging panel selecting four for the shortlist based on criteria such as the impact the project has on the community and the urgency for redecoration.

Farringdon Park Community Centre is a volunteer run venue which provides facilities for the whole community and allows residents to learn new skills.

To vote for Farringdon Park Community Centre, please visit www.johnstonestrade.com/communityspirit before February 13.

Anyone who votes will be entered into a prize draw from which the winner will receive a pair of tickets to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley on March 22.

Preston midfielder John Welsh, who visited the centre with teammates to back Farringdon Park Community Centre’s bid for success, said: “This centre is absolutely crucial for all of the residents in this area, so
I’m desperately hoping they win the Johnstone’s Paint Community Spirit competition.

“I will certainly be voting for Farringdon Park and I would urge everyone else to do the same.”

Dot Halliwell, secretary of the Residents Association of Farringdon and Thirlmere, believes winning a complete redecoration of their facility would provide a huge boost to residents.

“The centre has been closed for 18 months, but we have now had permission from Preston City Council to re-open it and it will be run by volunteers,” said Dot.

“The centre needs a lot of work done to it so if we were to win the Johnstone’s Paint first prize, it would be a major boost for everyone.”

The other shortlisted finalists are based in Milton Keynes, Portsmouth and Dagenham.

Ben Wilde, brand and sponsorship manager for Johnstone’s Paint, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the interest in our Community Spirit campaign and the four shortlisted finalists which includes the Farringdon Park Community Centre.

“We have four very worthy finalists and it’s now a question of which one can gain most public support.

“One of the key factors behind the campaign is the determination of Johnstone’s Paint to work closely with communities and supporting residents in these areas.

“Whichever project is successful, we are convinced the redecoration makeover will make a real difference.”

Johnstone’s has a long history as one of the UK’s foremost professional trade paint brands and is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2015.
