Simon Grayson ‘Delighted For Players And Fans’

5 December 2015

Manager Simon Grayson said that hard work on the training ground had paid off after his side put their game plan perfectly into action at Turf Moor.

The Lilywhites ended the Clarets ten game unbeaten run in the Championship with a 2-0 win against their local rivals in stormy conditions in east Lancashire.

A first league goal from Will Keane and a another goal from Daniel Johnson meant the points headed back to the west half of the county and sent the 2,399 sell out away end home happy.

Speaking to PNE PlayerHD after the game the manager stated that his side’s two counter-attacking goals had been something they had worked hard on in training this week.

“We have worked on counter-attacking this week, which is why we chose to make the change and bring Will Keane into the team,” he said. “We felt that was a way we could hurt them today and I am delighted with the result.

“It was a hard fought game, as it normally is in a derby match. We knew we had to be competitive; match them, because they are a good team, which is hard-working, with goal threats and are one of the favourites to go back up.

“But we did some very good things – as a team we defended very well – you can’t limit a team to no chances, because they have some big players, but overall it was very pleasing.

“We suffered the disappointment a couple of weeks ago against Blackburn and we wanted to make sure we didn’t experience that again today.

“I am delighted for the players and for the supporters as well, who I am sure will be chuffed to bits with that result today.”

The opening goal from Will Keane will be one he will have enjoyed, having shot through his brother’s legs to give PNE the lead.

“We said at half-time that we had to do the simple things better; pass it simpler and quicker in possession.

“We worked on things this week that we thought could hurt them and that’s why I brought Will Keane back in today they carried out the game plan, which as a manager is great to see.

“Will had a good opportunity today to come into the team and he has taken that opportunity and I am really pleased for him, because he has worked very hard for it.”

And another goal on the break tied up the points: “We had to be disciplined when we went in front We still had to play from the shape of the team and we counter-attacked really well.

“Garns did ever so well to set up the second. I am sure he would have been desperate to shoot himself, but it was a nice ball back for DJ.

“We had said to DJ before the game that he was due a goal and ultimately he came up with the goods. The second goal is vital in games – last week against Fulham when we dominated for large parts we didn’t get that second goal, but today it guaranteed we got the three points,” he added.
