Manager Simon Grayson will have a number of fitness tests ahead of Tuesday night’s visit of Chesterfield.
The North End boss spoke at lunchtime on Monday and admitted he would be without at least a couple of players, with more likely to face rigorous checks on Tuesday before he can name his team.
“We assessed a few players on Sunday and again on Monday,” he said. “One or two are going to need a last minute check on Monday, but that is part and parcel of football.
“Andy Little and Jordan Hugill, through suspension, are definitely going to be out and there will be quite a few others who will be touch and go as to whether they make it.
“You have to deal with these situations. We have a squad we believe is strong enough to cope with things like this, although it’s not ideal.”
The fact the Lilywhites have a second game so quickly after their first defeat of the season at the weekend is something that the gaffer is pleased about.
“When you lose a football match the first thing you want to do is get back on the proverbial horse and get playing again and we have the chance to do that we another game on Tuesday,” he continued.
“Hopefully the players will respond, which most of the times I have been at the football club they have done and we will go out and give it our best shot to win the game.
“We are disappointed and frustrated that we have lost one league game so far this season.
“We want to be higher up the league, but it is a long campaign and it is not where you are now, but where you are in May. Wolves weren’t top and six points clear this stage last season, so there is plenty of time to go, but we are working to get it right.”
And the response will have to come against an inform Chesterfield side, who have followed up their League Two championship win with a positive start to life back in League One.
“They have got the momentum from last year. They have a winning habit and mentality and play some good attacking football, so we know we are in for a tough task.
“They will look at our team and expect us to be getting a reaction from the weekend, but we have to be aware of their strengths.
“We have to win our battles and earn the right to win the match and that was something that we did not do at the weekend, but we will be looking to try and put that right on Tuesday night,” he added.
