Simon Grayson: “Up The Tempo”

2 October 2014

Simon Grayson says his team cannot rest on their laurels after a good performance at Coventry and is looking for even more from his side back at Deepdale.

The PNE boss was speaking ahead of the visit of Colchester United to PR1 and admitted his side would need at least the same level of display as shown at the Ricoh Arena and then more again.

“We need to replicate last weekend’s performance and even up the tempo if we are to get the right result against Colchester this weekend,” he said.

“We have responded really well since [the Chesterfield game] and we need to push on again at the weekend against a good Colchester team who have been resurgent under the new manager.

“They have had four clean sheets out of the last five and had two great away performances at Crewe and Orient in the last few weeks.

“We will have to be hard to beat, limit chances for the opposition on our goal, but we also want to pass the ball around and score as many goals as possible – that’s the team’s philosophy.

“We want to build off the last couple of games and really and build some momentum over the next few weeks and months.”

However, the opposition will have thoughts of their own in a similar vein, having seen an upturn in fortunes since Tony Humes was appointed boss at the beginning of last month.

“Tony has come in and done a great job,” continued the gaffer. “They have got some good results, kept clean sheets and got some great victories, especially at Orient when they were down to ten men and then again last week against Crewe.

“We have to patient and understand that if we don’t turn up, win our battles – collectively and as a team – then we won’t be able to compete.

“The lesson can be learned from last year where we absolutely dominated, had something like 30 attempts on target, but didn’t end up winning the game.

“We have to be better than last week. We might have to be patient and the crowd might have to be patient with us and understand we need to pass it around and wait for the opportunities to come along,” he added.
