Steve Thompson Joins Preston North End Coaching Staff

1 July 2015

Steve Thompson has been appointed first team coach at Preston North End with immediate effect.

Thompson joins Simon Grayson's backroom staff once again, after working under him at Blackpool, where the pair won promotion to the Championship.

The pair's first footballing partnership came at Leicester City, when both men represented the Foxes as they earned promotion to the Premier League in 1994 via the Championship Play-Offs.

Most recently, Thompson was assistant manager to Neil Redfearn at Leeds United, playing a major part in their improved form during 2015, before leaving the Club.

Bringing a wealth of experience to the role, the 50-year-old is an exciting addition to the team at PNE and he can't wait to get started.

"I've been to the training ground and met all the staff and I am looking forward to meeting all of the players and getting back into action."

"We [Simon Grayson and Thompson] have just got a good relationship. I'm not a 'yes man', he respects my opinion and hopefully we can be good together again.”

The PNE boss is delighted to get Steve on board and hopes to have more success working alongside him and the rest of his backroom team.

"Once I saw that he had left Leeds and what an impact he had there, I thought it was a great opportunity. Hopefully ‘Tommo’ can have a major impact on our season and over the next few years.

"It's no coincidence that he has worked at a good level; he's a good coach, he's always had a good rapport with the players that he's worked with and he fits into my ethos of what I want from my staff."

As part of the change to the backroom team John Dreyer has left the Club. Dreyer who joined the Club in January 2012 as assistant to Graham Westley took charge of the Lilywhites as caretaker manager for one game before the appointment of Grayson, defeating eventual champions AFC Bournemouth at Deepdale.

The Club would like to thank John for his hard work and efforts in the last three years and wish him all the very best for the future.
