This weekend’s hundred page issue of the matchday programme has a distinctly Scottish feel to it.
What with the vote for independence we decided to explore why Preston North End has always had a strong Scottish connection with it.
Within our spectrum of interviewees and features we include Bill Shankly, Tom Smith, Callum Davidson, Tommy Docherty, Paul Gallagher, Scott Laird and Brian O’Neil reflects on what makes PNE a welcoming club for the Scots.
“I think where Preston is situated in England obviously plays a big part in that,” the now Academy coach told The One And Only in one of many exclusives.
“Maybe because of the geographical part it’s easier for Preston scouts to go to Scotland rather than to go down south and have a look because it’s closer, so I imagine that’s a big part of it which is only natural.
“But it does seem at Preston there’s always been one or two Scottish players there throughout which maybe encourages another Scot to join because there’s another Scot to go to when settling in.
“But I don’t think you can define it in those terms. When Craig Brown was the manager, he signed me because he knew what I was all about.
“He’d known me since I was 14 and with Preston having a number of Scottish managers over the years, I think it’s just because when a Scottish manager comes in, he tends to know more Scottish players so signs them rather than thinking ‘oh we’ve got to get as many Scots as we can’ kind of thing.”
