The Will Hayhurst Diaries – Game Day

7 June 2013

The Preston North End youngster made an instant impact for the Republic of Ireland, setting up a goal and hitting the crossbar – with a header.

The winger played 70 minutes in his country’s opening Elite Round Group Two European Championship qualifier in Serbia against Switzerland and he is already looking forward to Saturday’s second match.

This is what Will made of Thursday in Belgrade...

GAME DAY!!

10.00am - After waking up we get breakfast, I have to say I am missing the English food, especially Special K!

10.30am – 1.00pm - We rest up and prepare for the game, Steven Smith is sat outside his room playing rap/London music, reminds me of Jeffrey Monakana with his Dre beats on!

Thank god he doesn't play his music in the dressing room before Preston games!

2.30pm -8.00pm - Game time! Excited to be back playing after the last game against Sheff Utd, turning up at the stadium my mum and dad surprised me in being there!

The game ended 2-2, not a bad first result!

But after being 2-0 up, we are disappointed we didn't take all three points.

I played 70 minutes on the right wing and set the first goal up, unfortunately I hit the cross bar with a header, I was gutted!

Never was good at heading, don't think I've ever scored a header in my life! But still it's a good result to build on for the next game on Saturday.

9pm - Back at the hotel, have food and go down for ice baths.

Not the most favourite thing for footballers but you get used to them and they are great for recovery!

9.30pm - Relax and sleep.
