Welsh Pleased With Team Display

9 August 2015

Man of the match John Welsh was pleased with the start to the season after the Lilywhites picked up a battling point at Deepdale.

The George Banks Jewellers and Sky TV choice for the match award spoke to PNE Player after the game and felt the side more than showed that the Championship should know what the Lilywhites are all about.

“It was a good draw for us,” he said. “We knew they would have a lot of possession, but we kept a good shape, concentrated for the full 90 minutes and when we got the chance, go and play.

“We created some good chances; one off the line that could have gone our way, but we are pleased with a good team performance and there were a lot of positives to take from it.”

The former Liverpool midfielder felt that the defensive side of the game was excellent and that with a bit more luck they could have earned more than the point they went away with.

“What we did well last year – we don’t want to give teams a shot on goal, let alone a shot on target and when you saw the blocks at the end of the game, that’s the sort of spirit and work ethic we have amongst the lads,” he continued.

“We don’t want to give much away and we put our bodies on the line in the same way we did last year.

“It is tough against very good players who have played at the highest levels. I played against Stewart when we were younger, so I know what he is about and how good his left foot is. I had to get tight to them and sometimes you have to put your foot in and win the ball and occasionally you might end up kicking people, but that’s the side of the game I enjoy.

“There is a great team ethic amongst the lads and we just need to keep that going for the season and the quality of the forward players will come through and once we merge both sides of the game, then we will be a force to be reckoned with.”
