Whirlwind Year For Young 'Keeper

13 May 2016

It's been quite a season for young goalkeeper Mathew Hudson, signing his first professional contract and making his senior debut.

The 17-year-old then picked up the Scholar of the Year award at the 2016 Player of the Year awards to cap off a memorable season for the Academy graduate.

Speaking of collecting the award, Hudson said: "It means everything, it's been a bit of a whirlwind year and every minute of it I have enjoyed. I'm still enjoying it now and it's something I'm looking forward to carrying on next year.

"Stepping up and making the step up to the first team has been a really good experience for me and I've loved every minute of it.

"With 'keepers like Chris Kirkland, Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and even Declan Rudd when he was here, training with them has just been something I have really enjoyed and I just can't wait for the future."

Matt made his debut against Leeds United back in December, but it wasn't the first time the 'keeper had been around the first team squad, having been on the bench the previous season.

"I was on the bench as a first year against Manchester United and that was an experience that lightened my eyes up, thinking I might get on there!

"Then it happened at Leeds, it's just one of those things that is my job, it's what I have got to do and when the opportunity came, I took it.

"If I want to be a professional footballer I have to make my debut at some point. A lot of people might say Leeds isn't one of the nicest places to make your debut but I had to do it and thankfully and hopefully I did it well and I really enjoyed it.

"The lads protected me really well, I still look back on it now and look at the clips and think that I didn't really do much wrong, it was a bit unfortunate that Alan Browne scored the own goal but it's football and that happens sometimes."

And the young 'keeper is looking forward to seeing what the future holds: "It's something that I will learn from and that I will take into the future and especially next year I will look to build on that and that's something that I really look forward to."
