Bailey Wright Named In Australia’s Final 23-man World Cup Squad

29 May 2014

Preston North End defender Bailey Wright has been named in Australia’s 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The 21-year-old, who made 51 appearances for the Lilywhites during the 2013/14 season, was included in Ange Postecoglou’s initial party of 30 players and remained with the Socceroos when the squad was trimmed last month.

Now it has been confirmed the centre back has made the final cut and will become the first North End player since Sir Tom Finney and Tommy Docherty to represent the Club at a World Cup.

Wright made his debut for Australia in a trial match against Brazilian outfit Clube Parana on Monday and lasted the full 90 minutes.

The defender may get the chance to play against some of the best players in world football during the summer - including the likes of David Costa, Andres Iniesta, Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie.

Australia begin their World Cup campaign against Chile in Cuiaba on 13th June before facing Holland in Porto Alegre on 18th June and then Spain in Curitiba five days later.

Everyone at Preston North End would like to congratulate Bailey and wish him the best of luck for the tournament in South America.
