Patrick Agyemang scores against West Brom with an overhead kick

Patrick Agyemang was the hero once more as his sublime overhead kick gave North End a superb 1-0 win over promotion chasing West Brom at Deepdale.

His goal on 76 minutes was enough to eanr Preston all three points and it was certainly a goal worthy of winning any match.

After a superb win against Cardiff on Saturday, it was no surprise when Agyemang replaced the suspended David Nugent in attack but Paul Simpson made one other change, with Matt Hill returning at left back, allowing Graham Alexander to return to his more natural position on the right while Kelvin Wilson dropped to the bench.

The first chance of the match fell to Kevin Phillips for the visitors on 8 minutes. The former Villa man finding himself in a bit of space, but his curling effort, from the edge of the box flew just wide.

Patrick Agyemang had the first real chance for the home side on 23 minutes, a good run by Whaley opened up the West Brom defence before he slipped the ball through to Agyemang. With his confidence high after his first goal of the season on Saturday he took it past one man before getting a shot in but his effort was blocked by the body of Perry and Zuberbuhler collected at the second attempt.

The chance bought the PNE fans to their feet and they found their singing voices once more, as North End put the visitors under some pressure.

Four minutes later and West Brom should have been in front. A superb cross from Hungarian international Zoltan Gera found John Hartson at the far post but his header crashed off the crossbar and over for a goal kick.

West Brom were looking anything but comfortable at the back with both Agyemang and Dichio forcing them into conceding corners before Pascal Zuberbuhler got no where near the resulting corner and punched Sean St Ledger clear instead. (38 mins)

Quashie was the first man in the book on 39 minutes for a two footed lunge on his Scotland team mate Graham Alaxander. The referee was straight out with the yellow card, with the only saving grace for Quashie that he did get the ball otherwise the card could have been a different colour.

From the resulting free kick, North End huffed and puffed but after the initial effort which hit the wall the loose ball just wouldn't quite fall for anyone in front of goal.

Robinson was cautioned in injury time for an off the ball clash on the edge of the PNE area which left Sean St Ledger in a heap on the floor.

The second half started just as the first had ended, with the referee issuing a yellow card, this time to John Hartson who used his elbow to try and get the better f Liam Chilvers in the air.

A minute later and Carlo Nash was forced to tip a long range effort from Ronnie Wallwork behind for a corner, admittedly the former Man United man was given too much space and Nash took the opportunity to tell his defender exactly what he thought of the marking.

Paul McKenna had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring on 55 minutes, following a promising counter attack. Once more Simon Whaley was in the thick of the action as he charged forward down the right his infield ball to Dichio was well controlled by the big man who played a neat through ball for McKenna but the midfielder, through one on one with Zuberbuhler scuffed his effort wide of the left hand post.

North End were certainly having the better of the chances in the second half and should have been ahead on 62 minutes, this time Danny Pugh left ruing a missed chance.

A good burst from Sedgwick into the box opened things up before he squared it for Agyemang who had his back to goal. The Ghanaian international turned and fired in a shot which was blocked but the loose ball fell for Pugh on the far post but his left footed shot, back across the face of goal flew agonisingly wide of the right hand post.

Only a last gasp clearance from Sean St Ledger prevented Albion from taking the lead four minutes later after more good attacking play from Gera, he played the ball inside for Wallwork who despite looking offside was through but St Ledger did well to clear the danger.

At the other end Simon Whaley bought an excellent save out of Zuberbuhler, with a rocket of a shot from just inside the area. The swiss goalkeeper did well to parry the ball away and out of reach of any of the North End attackers for a corner.

Bryan Robson made the first change of the match, replacing John Hartson with another striker with Premiership experience in Nathan Ellington and his first touch bought a superb save out of Carlo Nash with a long range effort.

From the resulting corner the PNE keeper made the save of the match to keep the score goalless. The corner came in from the left and Paul McShane got the initial header and with Nash about to collect it took a wicked deflection but Nash who was wrong footed reacted quickly to make the save.

The opening goal did come on 78 minutes and it was the man of the moment Patrick Agyemang with probably the goal of his career. With his back to goal the PNE number nine hit a sublime overhead kick which couldn't have been executed any better and the ball flew past the Baggies keeper.

Albion responded by putting Jason Koumas on to replace Darren Carter, with the midfielder entering the field to a chorus of boos with fans still remembering an incident involving him when he was a Tranmere Rovers player.

Kevin Phillips had two glorious opportunities to get West Brom back level, in quick succession, but he scuffed his first effort before firing the second into the side netting from 8-yards out.

Agyemang left the field to a standing ovation on 86 minutes, to be replaced by Joe Anyinsah who was making his first appearance of the season. The change saw Whaley move up to partner Dichio in attack, with Anyinsah taking his place on the right wing.

There were still some nervous moments with only a one goal cushion but Carlo Nash was a rock in the North End goal smothering and collecting everything that came his way.

So Agyemang was the hero once more as North End secured their second home win in as many games, roll on Derby on Saturday.
