Be The Twelfth Man

Posted on: Sat 15 Sep 2007

Fresh from scoring on his England U19 debut, Andy Carroll is hoping to take that form with him into the game against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend. But the Newcastle United loanee is hoping that he and his team-mates can get some inspiration from off the field as well.

Andy, back from England U19 duty you must have been pleased with the way things went there?
It was a great start on my debut, to start and get a goal was great, especially winning 4-0. Hopefully I am in the squad for the qualifiers next month.

You mentioned before the game that you were delighted to get the start so to go and score and play so well must have felt fantastic?
It was great, I was always wanting to score on my debut, like everyone would, as soon as I did I was over the moon. I thought I played alright and the team played well so hopefully I will get picked in the next games.

For an Under-19 squad there is a lot of good Premiership quality in there.
There's a lot of great players but I was just focusing on myself really and how I played, I thought I had done well and enough to get in there.

Do you think the fact that you have been playing regular first team football with Preston helped you get into the side?
Yes, a few of them lads are only playing at Academy and Reserves level. I've got a little bit more experience playing first team games for Newcastle and Preston, I'd like to think that that experience helped me get in.

At U19 level a few of the lads must have a bit of growing to do, so you must have towered over most of them?
There was a few small ones and I was the tallest, I just need to beef out a bit now and stop growing.

The key now must be to get a goal from Preston North End and get that part of your career underway?
I can't wait to get my first goal for Preston, once that happens things will just get better and better from there.

How do you think things have gone, you've been involved in the last two games?
I think I have done alright but as soon as I get a goal, or as soon as anyone gets a goal then the whole team will be boosted.

Do you think that's all we need, a goal to kick-start everything?
Yes, as soon as we get a goal and get a win I think everyone will just forget about the past and we will keep going on well.

With all the competition up front you must be pleased that you are getting picked ahead of all of them?
I wouldn't say I am ahead of them. I've just got to train hard and prove that I am worth a starting place. I'll train on Friday, put myself about a bit and show them that I should be number one.

It's a return to Deepdale, on your full debut things started so brightly before Colchester scored, you seemed to win everything in the air.
I was just a bit unlucky really, they knew that the ball was coming to me and they marked everyone so that they couldn't hit the ball to me and they had to pass it through the back. They did well to stop that so I couldn't do nothing really

Sheffield Wednesday come to Deepdale on Saturday, with both teams being down at the bottom does that add to the pressure of the game?
I wouldn't say pressure, everyone goes into the game the same, wanting to win, I don't think there is any extra pressure. We are just looking to win, no matter who it is against, we won't think about us being at the bottom of the league, we are just trying to win the game.

Have you felt any of the anxiousness of the fans in the city of Preston?
I've not spoken to any of them but they look a bit like if we are getting beat or not playing well they will get on our back. What we really want to do is get out straight away, play well and get them on our side and then hopefully they will stay on our side right through the game because that will help us.

How does that compare with the crowd and atmosphere at St James Park?
The key is that the fans can be the twelfth man, they can encourage the whole team. If the fans are on your back it is hard for you to get the ball and be confident. The fans have been alright here and they can be again at the weekend, hopefully we can go on and give them that win that they want.
