Lonners Looks For Three In A Row

Posted on: Fri 05 Oct 2007

One man with more to prove than most when North End travel to Portman Road is keeper Andy Lonergan.

Playing in that most unique of positions where only one man can be satisfied each week, there's no chance to switch roles or aim to fill in elsewhere if the place comes under threat. Lonners therefore knows he needs to keep battling away against the Tractor Boys at the weekend and pull off a top performance as PNE look to extend their winning run in East Anglia to three games.

Despite his recent extended run in the side after being handed a chance when injury struck Wayne Henderson's season, the 23-year-old doesn't see himself as filling in between the sticks, and wants to ensure that the Irishman's hopeful return to fitness doesn't equate to an immidiate first team return.

"I'm not thinking that I'm keeping Wayne's jersey in his absence - I'm keeping it for good," he proclaimed.

"As a group of goalkeepers, I think we like to spur each other on to an extent, but I'm under no illusion. I'm in the team and I know that the other two want to be in it, so obviously you've got to look after yourself, even if we do like to encourage each other.

"We're all really good friends and we all get on really well. It's a bit difficult with Hendo right now because of his injury - it means that we don't see too much of him - but hopefully we will do soon."

The spirit that Lonergan alludes to is something that has come under particular spotlight in recent weeks, with every player in the squad eager to talk about the great spirit that prevails in the dressing room despite an indifferent start. Tuesday's 5-1 victory over Southampton, he claims, is something that everyone was ready and waiting for.

"There's always been that good mood in the camp. It may sound silly with us not having been winning games previously, but everyone thought we'd be winning games sooner rather than later. We expected some team would end up on the wrong end of a good hiding, and luckily Southampton took it!

"It felt like we weren't getting the rub of the green before Tuesday, and even until about the seventieth minute against Southampton it wasn't really going our way. Once that third went in I think everyone felt so much better. It didn't mean that we could relax, but it was just so much better than a 2-1 or 1-0 lead.

"Getting the crowd onside on Tuesday was probably the most important thing. It's only one win, so let's not get carried away, but it's a fantastic win and let's hope we get another against Ipswich."

"They're a good team, as the gaffer's been reiterating to us. They're a nice team to watch and play the right way, but make no mistake, it's going to be a hard game. I think we're as ready for them now as we've ever been at any point this season.

"I think when teams like to play football, like Ipswich do, it makes it better for everyone, whether you're watching them, managing them or whatever. Fortunately we've been able to match them and have had some good results down there in recent seasons - let's hope there's another good one to come this weekend."

If Andy can produce the form he's so capable of doing, a positive result looks more of an expectation than a hope for a side exuding such a confident air.
