Be Prepared

Posted on: Mon 11 Feb 2008

North End's number seven is ready to dig in and join his team-mates in the trenches at Layer Road on Tuesday to do everything possible to come away with what would be a vital three points.

The droll Yorkshire winger spoke to PNE.Com at the Club's hotel in darkest Essex and was delighted to have got back in the side against Coventry following his suspension, albeit down to an injury to one of his team-mates.

"Obviously you are always hoping that there's a chance [you'll get back in] and with Lewie Neal being injured I got the opportunity and hopefully I can keep the shirt now I'm back in.

"It has definitely helped the Manager being able to keep a fairly settled side. If you do do well it is nice to know that you will stay in the side and if you don't do the business you know you will be out of the team because there is someone waiting to take your place; so if we have a settled side it can only help us."

The win over the Sky Blues was not the prettiest, but the 28-year-old was not complaining: "It was a horrible game to play in and I'm sure it was a horrible game to watch, but the position we are in we have to scrap for everything at the minute. There aren't going to be many games between now and the end of the season where it is going to be pure football and 25 passes then a goal, so if that's what we've got to do to stay in this League then we will.

"It was a vital win. It puts us just two points behind them now it would have been a big gap if they had beaten us. It is vital we start picking up points against the teams who are around us and Colchester is another of those."

And facing the Us on Tuesday now has even bigger significance having moved out of the bottom three for the first time since Boxing Day: "It's a game we can't afford to lose and we will be aiming to take something from the game," added Chris. "If we play like we have been doing recently then we've got a chance, but obviously they are going to be fired up for it as well and it should be a good game.

"It's probably going to be a battle and we have to be prepared to dig in and do whatever it takes to get the three points, a point or whatever it may be. It's at the stage of the season where the games are coming thick and fast and coming here straight from Saturday it will be a tough game on the legs, but we have to be ready."

After last year's almost invincibility at Layer Road, Colchester have not maintained that success on their home turf this year - in the last season at the stadium - and Sedg experienced something similar when he came into the Championship with Rotherham, but he does not think it makes it any easier for the Lilywhites.

"I know when I was at Rotherham and we first came up we had a great home record in the first season because it was a horrible ground to come to, but we didn't do as well the next year because teams probably knew what to expect. Colchester have also lost a lot of influential players and like ourselves they just haven't got going yet this season."

Sedg will be looking to add to his goals scored column at Layer Road - do you fancy the number seven to pop up with an all-important strike? He's 22/1 for first or last goal or 7/1 for anytime - click here to go to pnebetting.com and back him to do it!
