Sedge: I'd Rather Be On The Left Than Left Out!

Posted on: Tue 26 Feb 2008

Same again please - so says the man who seems to be enjoying doing something different at the moment.

Chris Sedgwick has traded places with Simon Whaley and spent the last 135 minutes of competitive action in a relatively unfamiliar left wing berth, but given the success it has brought, the former Rotherham wide man is hoping the policy can continue to pay dividends.

Reviewing recent form and looking ahead to Tuesday night's encounter with Stoke, Sedge revealed:

"It was a good point at Watford - obviously the first draw under the gaffer. We knew it would be a tough game because they're physical and direct, but we stood strong. They had a few good chances, but we might have nicked it ourselves so both sides can come away thinking it was a fair result.

"I think Stoke will present us with a very similar game to Saturday because they're another direct team, although they do try to play more football. Again they've got a threat from a long throw and some big men up front, so we'll have to be ready to deal with that.

"When we played them at their place I thought we started really well, but when they scored it really seemed to knock the stuffing out of us, and they won it quite comfortably in the end. We'll want to put that right this time, and though they've got a number of ex-PNE players who'll want to come back and do well, we're looking to put one over on them too. It'll add a fair bit of extra spice to the game.

"There have been a couple of bad results in recent times, like the defeats at Colchester and Norwich, but we're generally on quite a good run and hopefully we've stopped the rot and will get the results we need to stay in this division.

"We need to pick up wins at home to get us out of our current situation, and though we're playing a team at the top of the league, this game is no different. They're fighting at the top and we're fighting at the bottom with both of us wanting the three points for very different reasons, so this fixture has got the right recipe to be a good game.

And with a recent change of flanks, how has Sedge found life on the left wing?

"It's different, obviously. I've played the last game-and-a-half out there, and I'll play wherever. As long as I'm in the team, I'm happy, and being out on the left gives a different dimension to the game because I can come inside and get the shots away.

"I played there a couple of times under Billy Davies, and it was something I did for a while at Rotherham when I was younger, so I'm used to playing on that side, and I'm happy if I'm playing anywhere in the midfield four. I'm there for the time being, but the great thing is that we're ready for the change, and Simon or I can play on each other's wing if need be, so the system suits us.

"Everyone knows they've got to stay on their toes at the moment because if you don't, your place will get taken. The gaffer has said that if you do your job, you'll stay in the team, and that's exactly what's happened of late. I found that out myself when I had a dip in form earlier in the season and got left out, but thankfully I'm back in now and hopefully I can keep my place."

Moving from right to left means that the direct duel between old friends Sedge and Danny Pugh may not come to fruition, but the Yorkshireman is hoping he can renew acquaintances with his White Rose compatriot at some point during the evening.

"It'd be nice to get the chance to play against Danny if we're both selected, and even if we're not in a direct head-to-head battle I'm sure I'll get the chance to come up against him at some point. As long as we come out winners I'm not really bothered who plays where!"

Chris is 22/1 to score the first goal against the Potters. Fancy a flutter? PNEBetting.co.uk are waiting to make you rich right now!
