Tony Singleton
Former Preston North End player, Tony Singleton has sadly passed away at the age of 71. Singleton made more than 300 appearances for the Lilywhites and will be best remembered for scoring the goal which took Preston to the FA Cup Final in 1964.
Singleton began his career playing local league football for West Lancashire side Whittingham but he was soon snapped up by Preston North End, signing for the Club in 1955 but due to National Service he did not make his debut until August 1960 in a game against Arsenal at Deepdale.
Tony soon established himself in the Preston North End line-up at centre-half and would become a real crowd favourite throughout the 1960s, his best moment coming when he smashed the ball into the back of the net from 40 yards in the 1964 FA Cup semi-final against Swansea at Villa Park.
Singleton made 333 appearances for North End before emigrating to the USA in 1967. His achievements with Preston North End will be forever commemorated at Deepdale, having been included in phase two of the Walk of Fame alongside the likes of Sir Tom Finney, Bill Shankly and the Club's other '300 Club' members.
Preston North End Football Club would like to pass on their condolances to Tony's family and friends. There will be a one minute silence at Saturday's Championship match against Crystal Palace in memory of this Deepdale legend.
