Lonners Has Football On The Brain

Posted on: Fri 16 May 2008

Andy Lonergan is determined to make the most of his summer break but admits that it will be almost impossible not to think about football in the close season.

The local-born stopper, who played in all but four of Preston's fixtures this season keeping 13 clean sheets, is now having a well deserved rest.

And while he may be all set jet away on his holidays, Lonners believes the nature of his profession means that football will never be too far away from his thoughts.

On a brief stop-off at the Deepdale offices before hitting the golf course, Lonergan said: "I can't help but think about it. I try not to but I'm always thinking of games that have gone this season but I think it's natural to think about things have gone well and not so well.

"I've been on one holiday already and I'm going on another next week. Basically, I've got a programme that starts next week but because I've been away with my family and I'm going away with my friends, I've started it a bit earlier.

"You've got to enjoy yourself but you get bored and you want to go for a run and do some training. Being in this job you can't get away from football and if you go out and eat something in the season like pie and chips you feel bad for it and you feel like you have to work it off, so you can't really relax to be honest.

"I can't wait to get away, I don't want to be spending much time around here - not that I don't like it - but why I've got the opportunity I'm going to take a break."
