Match Preview: A Nice Distraction

Posted on: Fri 02 Jan 2009

In January 2005 a cross from Richard Chaplow was put into his own net by Liverpool defender Djimi Traore at Turf Moor, to give the Clarets a 1-0 win over the Reds, PNE.com asked the now North End no.4 if there was a secret to overcoming the Premiership league leaders?

"Well basically they had Traore at the time who helped us out a bit when I was at Burnley, but I don't think he will be featuring since he is no longer at the club!" Joked Chappy.

"I think that, as Burnley has shown against Chelsea and Arsenal, if you get in their faces anything can happen and you never know if we set a good tempo then we have half a chance."

The team goes into the game having had a good run over Christmas, picking up four points from six and they are full of confidence: "I think everyone's looking forward to it. It's a big club coming to Preston which is good for the fans and good for the players and great for everyone involved really.

"Obviously, it depends what kind of team Liverpool bring, with them doing so well in their competitions. It's a nice distraction to have, but obviously the league is our main priority.

"Since I've signed for the club last January, we've gone from strength to strength. When I joined we probably would have crumbled at 1-0 and not got anything out of the game at Barnsley. But since the back end of last season and the start of this season I think we've shown character throughout and the gaffer has installed that in us. Now if we go 1-0 down, we can't really see ourselves not getting anything from the game.

"That's testament to the players and the way we approach the game and if we go 1-0 down now we fancy ourselves to go on and win the game. Four points from six is a brilliant return over the festive period and one that keep us in contention with the top half of the table."

The former West Brom player missed a couple of games just prior to the festive period, but having played 90 minutes on Sunday, he is raring to go: "I missed a couple of games because I had bronchitis so it was in tough in the case that my lungs were getting affected and not just my head.

"I'm feeling a lot better now and a lot stronger off the back of that 70 minutes on Friday and then 90 minutes on Sunday. I felt a lot stronger on Sunday through just playing the 70 on the Friday so I'm feeling a lot better now and looking forward to the Liverpool game."

And with confirmation from Rafa Benitez on Friday that the likes of Torres and Gerrard will be involved, he is looking forward to testing himself against some of the world's best players.

"Even if they don't put out what they will consider their strongest 11, the players that they will play will be top class international players. It will be a good test for us. They are top of the Premiership, still in Europe and were European champions not long ago. It's always good to pit yourself against the top players in the world and our players will thrive off it," added the Accrington-born midfielder.

Remember to get your commemorative scarves and programmes at the game, on sale from the Club shop and from the sellers around the ground.
