Sir Tom Tribute Part Of The Programme

Posted on: Fri 10 Apr 2009

The official PNE match programme caught up with a view from the opposite end of the Fylde coast ahead of this weekend's big game, with an exclusive interview with former FA chief executive and Blackpool fan Graham Kelly one of the big features in Saturday's great value £2 edition, which includes numerous features on PNE's very own Sir Tom Finney Day.

Our chat was so in-depth that we didn't have room to run everything, so here are a few of the former FA supremo's thoughts on North End boss Alan Irvine and the man to whom Saturday's fixture is being dedicated on his farewell public appearance at Deepdale, Sir Tom Finney.

Kelly explained: "I was a very big fan of Alan's when he came to Everton, and I thought Simon Grayson did a very, very good job, which is being carried on now by Tony Parkes. I'm glad to see both clubs doing so well, and I have great respect for Alan, who I think is a worthy successor to David Moyes."

And on Sir Tom, he added: "If you were to try and fill the Great Room at Deepdale for a discussion on who has made the greatest contribution to football, I'm sure I could keep the debate going on a long, long time, but I know whose name would win that particular debate at that particular venue, because there's a true gentleman in the city whose name adorns that stand."

For more of Graham Kelly's recollections on the famous Finney versus Matthews debate of the 1950s, and also to get hold of the all important lyrics for a number of PNE anthems we'll be singing in Sir Tom's honour at the game, pick up a copy of Saturday's Sir Tom Finney Day special edition programme - available now from the Club Shop or on the day of the game from vendors around the ground, priced at just £2.

Additionally, look out for copies of the commemorative Sir Tom Finney Day brochures which will also be on sale on matchday from our programme vendors, priced at £4.95 each.
