The official website broke the news of the Carling Cup opponents to manager Alan Irvine and the PNE boss was delighted with a local derby in opening round of the League Cup.
"I think it's a great draw," he told PNE.com on Tuesday morning. "It is a great draw for us and it is a great draw for Morecambe.
"Morecambe came to Deepdale in 2007 and won and we have to be very aware of that, but we realise we cannot underestimate Morecambe in any way. They will see it as a chance to repeat that and we have to make sure we approach the game the same as we approach every game and we go about our job professionally and properly. If we do that, we have a good chance of winning."
And the Scot is under no illusions as to the standard of performance needed from his side to make sure there is no repeat of the 2007 exit at the hands of the 'Shrimpers': "I think the biggest problem that teams can have in cup competitions when they play against teams from lower divisions is an edge of complacency and you cannot afford that. You cannot afford to play below your best.
"You cannot expect to win games, because every team is capable of producing a very good performance in 90 minutes and if we believe we can cause upsets when we play against teams from the Premier League, then we have to understand that that can happen to us when we play against teams from lower down."
Irvine also added that he would use the disappointment of losing in 2007 to motivate those players who were involved in that upset: "I am sure that the players who played in 2007 will remember the feeling well. One of the things I'll be doing when we prepare for the game is reminding them of how they felt after that particular game.
"That kind of feeling is something that stays with players for a long time. I remember at Everton when we lost against Shrewsbury, how painful that was and how many years that feeling lasted, so we have to make sure that we go about our job properly, because if we do, we will have a very good chance of getting through to the next round."
