Well the countdown is nearly over. Andy Murray will step out this afternoon knowing that he is a three, four or five sets away from being the first Brit to be in a Wimbledon final since 1977 and over seventy years since a male tennis player from these isles made it to the setpiece finale.

His predecessor as British number one, Tim Henman, has said that the Scotsman is hitting peak form at the right time, "It's going to be very difficult for anyone to beat him and I do fancy his chances going forward."

And fellow BBC commentator John McEnroe gave a glowing report card following his destruction of Juan Carlos Ferrero two days ago, "Andy Murray is now a legitimate contender to win this tournament. Once he got through his early nerves against Juan Carlos Ferrero, as well as the heat and a bit of fatigue, he just slipped into top gear. His performance for the last set and a half was A+."
