PNE are covering first base by allowing former Manchester City and England U21 keeper Nicky Weaver to come and train with PNE while Wayne Henderson is out injured - and the stopper will get the chance to show his credentials to the North End faithful by playing in Tuesday night's friendly at Wrexham.

Thirty-year-old Weaver, who signed for City from Mansfield Town and has also spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, has been a free agent since being released by relegated Charlton Athletic earlier this summer, the club for whom he had made 70 appearances over the course of the past two seasons.

Manager Alan Irvine told PNE.com that Andrew Lonergan had been the only senior keeper training since returning from Austria, so after outlining the latest on Irish star Hendo, he explained why he has been taking a look at another man with international experience.

"Obviously with Wayne's situation, we're not sure how he's going to be," he admitted. "We feel he will come back without any difficulty from the problem he has, but we're a little bit light at the moment - because of the problem he has, we've only been training with one goalkeeper.

"Wayne has had a bit of a setback since the training in Austria - it's nothing major, but he's not been able to train since we got back from there. We hope he'll train soon.

"We've had the opportunity to bring Nicky Weaver in to do a bit of training and to play a game so we've decided to take that. Everybody knows he's a proven goalkeeper at this level and Premiership level, and he's played for England U21s as well. He's got a very good CV and we'll wait and see what happens over the next week."
