Wigan's Premiership class told on a wet Deepdale night as North End's unbeaten pre-season record fell.

Wearing a Holland-style kit, Roberto Martinez's side promised total football before the game and they produced some good passing football to complete a fine 4-1 victory over their hosts.

Hugo Rodallega, Charles N'Zogbia, Michael Brown and Jason Scotland grabbed the goals for the Latics before Neil Mellor grabbed a late consolation to continue his fine run of goalscoring form.

Manager Alan Irvine made a host of changes from the side which had started the victory over Stoke at the weekend, Henderson, Hart, Trotman, Nolan, Nicholson, Brown and Elliott all making their first Deepdale starts of the campaign whilst the majority of those who started at the weekend made do with a spot on the bench.

The game kicked off in wet and windy conditions and the slick surface clearly suited the Wigan style of play as Roberto Martinez's side demonstrated some quick passing from the off.

Wigan had a chance as early as the first minute when Hugo Rodallega picked the ball up midway into the North End half, ran at the Preston defence before slipping the ball into the path of Jordi Gomez, the former Swansea man tried to dink the ball over the top of the onrushing Wayne Henderson, a combined challenge of Henderson and Hart managed to deny the Latics.

Gomez showed that he had the ability to hit from distance as well as close range in the sixth minute when he picked the ball up 30 yards out and hit a shot that Henderson was forced to tip just inches over the bar.

North End had the ball in the back of the net on 13 minutes when Ross Wallace sent a curling free-kick into the box from the left flank, Elliott reacted first and toe-poked the ball beyond Chris Kirkland, but the linesman's flag choked out any North End celebrations. A tight call on the night and one which might have encouraged more debate had it been a more competitive fixture.

Wigan grabbed the first goal of the night on 36 minutes and it was a goal of real quality and simplicity. Lee Cattermole sprayed a fantastic ball out to the right flank, inch-perfect into the feet of Charles N'Zogbia, the French winger took the ball inside onto his left foot and whipped in a cross straight onto the head of Hugo Rodallega.

Two minutes later and it was 2-0 to Roberto Martinez's side. N'Zogbia decided against delivering the cross this time, he cut inside the challenge of Nolan and drilled a low shot just inside Wayne Henderson's near post. A great individual effort.

Wigan's Hendry Thomas had been a real thorn in the side of the North End midfield and after picking up a yellow card for a wild challenge on Darren Carter he was in action at the other end of the pitch with a low drive from 30-yards out that had enough power on it to squeeze under the body of Henderson. Fortunately for the Irish keeper the ball squirted to the right of the post and away for a corner, rather than across the line for a goal.

An absolute glut of changes for the visitors after the break but that didn't halt their attacking prowess any and just two minutes into the second period Michael Brown made it 3-0, driving the ball home with his right boot after neat interplay on the edge of the North End box.

A good chance for North End on 50 minutes, good football worked the ball out to the right flank and Michael Hart sent a looping cross into the six-yard box, Chris Brown rising highest to get his head to the ball but he nodded it well wide.

Sedgwick, on as a sub, showed some serious ambition with a looping volley from 25-yards out. It came after Carter had chipped a free-kick into the box and Sedgwick was onto the clearance with a right-footed strike.

The old Swansea combination of Jason Scotland and Jordi Gomez almost unlocked the North End defence on 63 minutes. Scotland bundling past three or four challenges before playing the ball into the path of Gomez, Lonergan came out to meet the Spanish attacker and there was crunching collision of bodies before the ball span wide of the post.

Neil Mellor almost had an immediate impact as a 65 minute substitute, the former Wigan loanee found time and space in the box to take down a Sedgwick centre, Mellor hit his volley over the crossbar before looking over to see that the linesman had flagged him offside.

Wigan skipper Mario Melchiot carved a hole in the North End defence in the 68th minute, playing a concise pass between centre-half and full-back, Gomez was onto it but he drilled a shot which was blocked away for a corner.

From the corner it was almost four as Liam Chilvers planted a header onto his own post, Jon Parkin got a hefty boot behind the ball to clear his lines.

It was 4-0 on 70 minutes. Michael Brown drilled a shot from the edge of the box and the power of the effort saw the ball come loose from Lonergan's grasp, striker Jason Scotland was quickest to react and he was there to slam home the rebound.

Lonergan had the better of Scotland in the 73rd minute, a clever back-heel from Cho Won-Hee played Scotland into clear space in front of goal, Lonergan rushed out to block the shot.

A snap shot from Neil Mellor on 81 minutes almost brought the North End crowd to their feet. It came after Jon Parkin had brought a Callum Davidson cross down into the former Liverpool man's path. Mellor's shot though was always spinning wide.

North End grabbed some consolation in the 86th minute of the match when Neil Mellor showed predatory instincts against his former club. The ball was played neatly into the path of Parkin on the edge of the box, the challenge taking the ball out wide to Sedgwick and he squared a left-footed ball back into the mixer and Meller was there first to side-foot the ball beyond Chris Kirkland.
