Match Preview: High Road To Hibernian

Whether you plan to take the high road or the low road north of the border, all that matters is that a thoroughly exciting weekend awaits for all North Enders.

PNE will test themselves against one of Scotland's biggest names at Easter Road in Saturday's 3pm kick-off, and though the trip is strictly business for the playing staff, the glorious city of Edinburgh awaits for supporters who are able to make a weekend out of the Club's final pre-season friendly ahead of the 2009/10 season.

With "one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the world", "world-class museums and galleries" and "top-class restaurants and bars" just part of the city's attraction (according to the tourist literature), this promises to be one of the most keenly awaited away days of the season, but the Club's focus is firmly on the football (shame, because we'd like to sample the bars) and the opponents ahead of us.

Fans of Peter Kay will be disappointed to hear that the hosts are no longer managed by Mixu Paatelainen, but his replacement is of solid pedigree, with former Falkirk boss John Hughes taking over the reigns for 2009/10. With his former club, Hughes started out as co-manager alongside Owen Coyle and once he had 'gone solo' he led the side to promotion from the Scottish first division and this summer took his side to the domestic cup final.

He has had to oversee change in his new surroundings, with Plymouth keeper Graham Stack, Manchester United youngster Daniel Gailbraith and Falkirk pair Patrick Cregg and Kevin McBride coming in as two stars head south of the border to come under our radar - defender Rob Jones working his way to fellow Championship side Scunthorpe to leave Hibs looking for a new captain and striker Steven Fletcher ending up at our local rivals Burnley.

Defender Chris Hogg is the new man in charge of the armband, with his incoming gaffer stating: "He has to be my first lieutenant, and believe in the philosophy of football that I want to play.

"Any message that I put across, he has to make sure he's on the same page. I'd like to think he'll take that responsibility and become a better player as well."

John Hughes

Hughes is expecting big things of every player as they take on the Lilywhites on Saturday, telling the Scotsman newspaper:

"If you were to ask me where we were in terms of five gears I'd say we are in second or third at the moment. Hopefully we can take that to third or fourth tomorrow and then on to fifth before hitting cruise control.

"I've been delighted with the effort and application all the boys have been giving me, they are a hard-working bunch of lads, a credit to themselves. They've been very receptive to what we are trying to do but as the days and weeks go by hopefully we'll see it all coming together."

The Hibees, who count tennis stars Andy and Jamie Murray, actor Dougray Scott, '500 Miles' crooners The Proclaimers and TV presenter John Leslie amongst their famous fans, are taking on Preston two days in a row, with a reserve side travelling to face local part-timers Preston Athletic on Friday evening - an unusual chance for Prestonians to see the two similarly-named clubs in action in unusually close proximity.

Saturday's Easter Road action represents the SPL side's only home pre-season friendly and the start of a week-long Lancashire hat-trick as they travel south to face Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers a week on Saturday for Jussi Jaaskelainen's testimonial.

Tickets for the Hibs v PNE encounter will be available from Easter Road on the day of the game, priced at £15 for adults and £10 for concessions (seniors over 65 and juniors under 18).

If you can't make it to the Scottish capital, join us for exclusive full match commentary, live via the brand new PNE Player media portal. Jonathan Breeze and Adrian Ward will be your hosts, with coverage getting underway from 2.55pm.
