Pre-Match Chat: Darren Carter

PNE v Leicester, Carling Cup second round

It's inevitable that Darren Carter will forever be accociated with his wondergoal that helped to steer PNE towards safety at the Walkers Stadium back in March 2008, but evidently there are many worse ways of being remembered.

With Leicester providing the opposition on Tuesday night, we thought we'd track him down at the Springfields training ground to see if he could spare a few moments to talk about that magic night and the all-new Leicester City we'll now be facing in a competition he still believes is very relevant to PNE...

Tuesday will be the first time you've played against Leicester City since that glorious night back in March 2008 - does it bring back the memories to be playing them once again?

"Yes, obviously it was a great result that night because there was a lot riding on the game. I think it was definitely a six-pointer at the time and both teams desperately needed the six points.

"The game was a bit of a stalemate, really, for much of the 90 minutes, but the ball just broke to me late doors, and luckily enough it went in, so it was a great night really."

For that reason, do you fear any sort of backlash from their fans as arguably 'the man who sent them down'?

"I don't know... maybe! It was a couple of seasons ago though, so hopefully it has passed, but there's no denying it was a massive goal for us and we needed that.

"We needed the three points too, without a shadow of a doubt, but I don't think they'll remember that too much because there was so much football played after that."

Is there a case for the argument that Leicester have done well out of being relegated, given that they seem to have come back strongly?

"Well, they've certainly ended up with a very good manager. Nigel Pearson is a very good guy, who I met at West Brom. He took over in temporary charge for a few games after Bryan Robson got sacked, and the lads really took to him.

"He's a great motivator who knows how to get you going, and I'm not surprised that he's got them doing well - they've made a good start anyway.

"Given that, I can see them doing well this year in the Championship."

Is his ability to motivate his biggest asset as a manager or is his tactical acumen perhaps more responsible for his success?

"Well, it's probably fair to say that it's a bit of both.

"For the couple of years that I spent working with him he showed he was a great man manager as well, so I've got the utmost respect for Nigel.

"All his teams are going to be hard-working and he'll get everyone at it, and he likes to play the right way as well. They'll get the ball down and get at us, so it will be a stern test for us."

It's a Carling Cup tie on Tuesday night - do you see this as an important competition for the Club?

"Yes, it's definitely an important competition. The gaffer is adamant that we want to win every game that we go into, and the Carling Cup is no exception.

"I think if you offered someone the chance to take promotion over the Carling Cup, they would obviously say yes, but I don't think that takes anything away from the Carling Cup.

"It's still a competition that gives you the chance to win a trophy in a final at Wembley, so you can't take it lightly - I don't think anyone here will be doing that."

Looking at your own potential involvement, Saturday was obviously a horrible day for Barry Nicholson and everyone who witnessed his injury, but in a roundabout way, does you see this as a chance for yourself now to stake a long-term claim for a place in the side?

"Well, first and foremost it's obviously devastating for Barry. He's such a great lad and he's a very good player for this Club, so you don't wish a broken leg on anyone.

"It was such an innocuous challenge as well; everyone is gutted for him and is hoping he'll be fit enough to make a speedy recovery.

"We've got the squad here to cope with that, though, and from a personal point of view I'm just continually trying my hardest to pin down a place.

"The gaffer is obviously making a few changes here and there throughout the squad for each game at the moment, but we'll just see if the next few weeks give me the chance to nail down a place."

Have many of the lads been able to catch up with Barry to see how he's getting on?

"Yes, I know that a few of the lads have been down to see him, and everyone else has at least texted or phoned him to see how he is.

"Hopefully he'll be up and about pretty soon and everyone obviously wishes him all the best. We'll all be behind him throughout his rehab and doing our best to help him in whatever way we can in his quest to get back to full fitness."
