"It Slipped Away From Us"

Posted on: Sat 29 Aug 2009

Preston North End boss Alan Irvine was a disappointed man after watching a controversial penalty decision deny his side all three points at Ipswich.

Irvine was left to rue a 42nd minute penalty, an incident which saw his skipper, Callum Davidson, sent off and one which allowed the home side back into the game.

"I don't know how on earth he was supposed to avoid handling the ball," Irvine said after Jonathan Walters' shot hit Davidson's arm from close range.

"He hasn't made himself any bigger, his arms were in front of his body, if his arms weren't there it would have hit his body or his face. I just feel as if it was the wrong decision.

"The only way he could have avoided it was amputation."

In the main, the Lilywhites looked to be in total control of the game in the first half thanks to an early Ross Wallace strike and the PNE gaffer was particularly disappointed that they lost that position of strength.

"I am disappointed that a game that we were in control of for most of the first half slipped away from us so far as in that we felt as though we could go on and win the game. The sending off was the major event in the game and that gave us a lot to do in the second half.

"I was delighted with the way that we were organised, with the discipline, we worked extremely hard and everyone has put in a little bit extra for the team.

"It's a good point. It's a hard place to come, people look and say that Ipswich haven't had the best of starts but I have no doubt that once things drop into place for Roy this will be a very difficult place to come."

The North End boss knew that his side were up against it in the second half but he was delighted that his team made a positive response to his half-time words of wisdom.

He said: "I told them that we had two choices. We could feel sorry for ourselves for what had happened or we could get to work and make sure that we were very disciplined, that we were very organised, that everyone put in that little bit of extra effort. I told them that I believed we could get a result, I felt quite comfortable throughut the second half."

The Preston boss must now assess the strength of his squad ahead of Tuesday's closure of the transfer window. Irvine admitted that he's happy with the quality of the squad but an injury to Sean St. Ledger may mean that he is a little light on numbers.

"I will continue speaking to the Chairman and we will see what happens. We have one or two things in mind which we are trying to do but we are also conscious of the financial constraints of the Club. We will see if something can be done which improves our squad, I am delighted with the squad we have got, it's a little bit thin and it would be nice to add one or two new faces.

"We only have a squad of 21 outfield players, two of those are injured at the moment and we have now got another couple of knocks.

"Sean St. Ledger has got an injury which might keep him out of some of the Ireland training or one or two of the games. We will assess everybody on Sunday, there are a lot of bumps and bruises but hopefully nothing too serious."
