Match Preview: QPR

Preston North End fans travelling to Loftus Road this weekend should make the trip expecting goals. The last two trips to West London have produced a total of nine goals, but sadly for Lilywhites fans they have only harvested one point for Alan Irvine's men.

A 3-2 defeat last season was preceded by a 2-2 draw the season prior when the Lilywhites threw away a two goal advantage in injury time.

Though the anticipated major investment at QPR has not really materialised they remain a club with huge ambitions and great expectations.

Jim Magilton was a surprise choice as mananger when he took charge during the summer months and early results suggest that his side are currently in a transitional phase.

Magilton looks to have recruited well on the face of it, Alejandro Faurlin a £3.5m signing from Institute the headline grabbing transfer but it's the loans of Adel Taarabt (Tottenham), Tom Heaton (Man Utd), Jay Simpson (Arsenal) and Ben Watson - all from Premier League - that could make the difference.

QPR will be protecting an unbeaten home league record on Saturday, one win and three draws. The victory came in their last home performance when they defeated Barnsley 5-2, a game which included a brace of goals from talented Hungarian midfielder Akos Buzsaky.

Gaffer's Team News
"The international break has given Paul Parry a chance, he's trained with us since last Wednesday and he's looked very good.

"Callum Davidson joined in with us for part of the session on Tuesday, he joined in with us on Thursday and seems to be perfectly ok so that's good news.

"We can't just assume that he's [Paul Parry] is going to be 100 per cent at this moment. It will take him a little bit of time to get up to that, but he's looking very good in the training that we have done, both in terms of the possession and the games."

The Opposition
Turmoil on and off the field is threatening to disrupt the R's season, but then that's nothing new at a club that has become accustomed to dealing with adversity in recent years.

Jim Magilton's side were already facing up to the prospect of being without skipper Martin Rowlands for the visit of PNE this weekend. The tenacious midfielder was red carded in QPR's 2-0 defeat to Swansea a fortnight ago and was suspended for this weekend's match. But Rowlands could now be out for much longer having damaged knee ligaments in the Republic of Ireland's 0-0 draw with Montenegro in midweek.

QPR will also be without Ben Watson this weekend, he too saw red at the Liberty Stadium and will sit this one out with his fellow midfielder.

Off the field and the future Chairman Flavio Briatore is very much in the air following the Crashgate affair which saw him banned from Formula One for life.

Many are suggesting that Briatore would fall short of the Football League's fit and proper persons test, but close friend Bernie Ecclestone is not concerned.

"Nobody is worrying about it at QPR," Ecclestone, the Formula One commercial rights-holder, said. "He says that he was not involved in what happened in Crashgate and has maintained that. But anyway, what has that got to do with football? He suffered a harsh punishment in Formula One but it is not as though he could even do the same things in football."

Jim Magilton

The Gaffer
"Flavio's very busy at the moment - but I know his thoughts on the team and he's been very positive. Everyone at the club has rallied around and we're looking to get through all of this.

"The one missing link in Rowan's game at the moment is goals - and we adapted to a system that suits him.

"It's affected his confidence and it's something I have to play with before making a choice. I would have liked to have taken Rowan to Ipswich before he came to QPR, and he, like Akos Buzsaky, suffered a bad injury last year. But I have to say that Akos has settled a little bit quicker."
Magilton expects Flavio to be at Loftus Road and tells londoninformer.co.uk that he can't make his mind up between Patrick Agyemang and Rowan Vine.

The Player
"He's [Magilton] a good man, he's a fair man and he picks his squad on merit.

"If you're good enough you can be in his squad, and hopefully we can all be good enough, pushing for QPR and winning.

"I've got a big respect for John [Gorman] and Jim I think they're doing a great job up there. We've amassed a really good talented squad and I don't think we're going to be too far away this season."
Former North End favourite Gareth Ainsworth is still on the playing staff at QPR and confident his side can do well this season.
