Solid As A Rock

Aussie Bailey Wright and Northern Irish defender Daniel Devine last played together in pre-season, however, you wouldn't have known it if you had watched their performance against Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup on Saturday.
The two looked like they'd spent a career together at the back, as they kept their much-vaunted opponents at bay, heading, tackling and looking composed and helping the side to a big victory over the Premiership's richest club.
PNE.Com spoke to the two together, Wright having just completed only his second full 90 minutes since getting his international clearance and he and Devine were very happy to have overcome the Eastlands club.
This was a game no-one expected you to win, but were you always confident you could do it?
BW: We have all been up for it the whole week. Everyone has been putting a lot into it all week and there has been a massive difference.
DD: We have been building towards it the last two or three weeks and when the draw was made we knew we could beat them and it was just a matter of working towards it and getting our heads right on the day. Man City are a massive club, probably one of the richest in the world, but it was the youth team and not the first team who we were playing and so they are just the same as us. We always knew that we could match them with our work-rate and that's what we did
The two of you haven't had much of a chance to play together, how did you find it?
BW: The last time me and Dan played together was a pre-season friendly against a team from Portugal, so it's been a while, but we communicated well together and prepared all week, so it is good to finally be playing.
DD: Bailey only got his clearance last week, so we haven't had much match time together, but he was brilliant today and did really well.
BW: Living together in the digs, we have a good relationship with each other.
You came in at the break level, what did Jamie say to you then?
BW: He told us we now knew the level and told us we could go and win it. We all wanted it and we proved that when we went out in the second half. There wasn't much difference between us and them, we played the better football and got the result in the end.
DD: In the first half we were edging it a little bit and just getting used to the way they played , and in the second half we knew the way they were going to play and what we were going to do and we did it.
George isn't renowned for his goals, when the ball was coming in you two must have been looking to get on the end of it?
DD: George got there just ahead of me. He did really well to get on the end of it and put the ball into the corner of the net, so fair play to him.
And there was a fantastic team celebration as well.
BW: Yes; the feeling was unreal, we couldn't believe it.
DD: I have never played in a stadium like that before, but to celebrate in front of the stand was a fantastic experience.
The second goal showed the qualities of the whole team.
DD: Jamie and Dougs have both been like that all season; they've done absolutely brilliant on the left and right wings. Their pace and control is excellent and their work-rate is outstanding.
BW: They did well today and Dougs finished his chance nicely. Jamie set it up for him beautifully and it doesn't get much better than that, does it?
Their goal seemed to come from a ball that was significantly out of play and this added extra pressure for you in the closing stages.
BW: It did make it a bit nervous at the end. The ball was well and truly out of play and both Dan and I knew it was out, but it's the referee's decision and that's what you have to play by. I knew we could still do it and in the end we did it.
DD: It was just a case of getting men behind the ball at that stage and not letting them play through us and we did that.
And at the end you could see what it meant to both teams.
BW: We came in as the underdogs and there is nothing better than winning as the underdogs. They are at the top level, so to be beaten by us brings them back down to earth.
DD: They came into it thinking it was going to be an easy win for us, but fortunately for us it worked out our way.
And there's no-one to fear in the next round now?
BW: No. If we can beat City we can beat anyone.
DD: If we can play the way we can play and the way we know we can play, then we can beat anyone.
