Preston manager Alan Irvine believes that his side played well but were again undone by a great strike, this time courtesy of Chris Burke.

He told PNE.Com: "I felt as though we were very comfortable in the first half, started the second half very well, and then we were probably undone by the best piece of play in the whole game.

"It was a fantastic strike and to think of the goals we've conceded recently, that one, the goal by Ambrose, and the goal at Blackpool were all top quality strikes.

"It's difficult to cope with them sometimes, although we did show the lads the video of Cardiff dong somthing along those lines with Bothroyd holding it up and the likes of Burke and Chopra playing off him, so that's disappointing."

Before this strike, Irvine felt that his side were playing well and even had chances to take the lead themselves.

"Defensively we looked quite solid, I felt we were comfortable with the exception of some set pieces where they put us under a little bit of pressure.

"We did have two good chances, one I actually thought had gone in when Jon (Parkin) first hit it, but it was a great save by the goalkeeper.

"The second half we started the game well. I'd spoken to the lads at half time about getting on the ball more and making more passes, and I felt we did that at the start of the second half, but unfortunately we were undone by a great strike."

Chris Sedgwick came close to scoring in the latter stages when his header clipped the woodwork and Irvine believes that the first goal was always going to be key.

"It just shows the margins between winning and losing games. I think whoever got the first goal was probably going to be hard to beat today.

"It wasn't a great game, but I felt that the pitch being extremely fast probably didn't help that, the goal was obviously a big moment."

Nevertheless, Irvine will be glad to be back at Deepdale next week as North End face Derby County followed by Plymouth Argyle.

"It's always better playing at home than away. We realise that our home form in the past has been very good, It's great to be back there and hopefully we'll be able to get two good results in the next two games at
Deepdale."
