At the final whistle the statisticians and historians were all searching through the record books to find out when North End had last won so handsomely and when our last hat-trick was scored, both signs of a very good day at the office.

North End's 7-0 drubbing of Colchester United was our biggest win since 1966 and the first time a North End player had scored a hat-trick in five years.

Chris Brown got the ball rolling early on and Chris Sedgwick added a second before half-time to put North End in a fine position at half-time to ensure their name was in the fourth round FA Cup hat.

But PNE continued where they left off in the first half and a quick-fire double from the Beast and an own goal from Ben Williams meant North End were five up with more than thirty minutes to play.

North End weren't in the mood to let their lower division opponents off the hook and Darren Carter finished a great move to score his first goal in over a year before Jon Parkin sent the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to complete the first PNE hat-trick since Richard Cresswell's on New Years Day in 2005.
