A London Road Return

Posted on: Mon 25 Jan 2010

PNE v Ipswich Town, 30th Jan 2010

Sean St. Ledger has already been back to his former club Peterborough United once this season, playing in the Middlesbrough side that drew 2-2 at London Road.

Before signing for PNE in 2006 he played 79 games for the Posh over four years scoring a solitary goal in the process. We spoke with the centre-back ahead of his second return to the Cambridgeshire club this season.

Before we move onto the game with Peterborough, how was your first training session with our new signing Danny Welbeck?

He's very lively, he's only just arrived but from what we've seen so far he's got a great great touch which is what you expect coming from Man Utd and he'll be a great asset to the squad. He seems a really nice lad, he's come from Man Utd, he must have the right character as well as being an excellent footballer.

He has a reputation for being pacy and being sharp around the box, is that what you've seen so far?

Definitely, he looks sharp, he comes short and then swings behind as well, we've been a bit short of pace in our squad, all the top teams have a bit of pace so he'll be a great addition to the squad. I think in football there's always a big man and a small man combination so hopefully that will work well for us but like I say he's got a lot to offer and hopefully he will make his debut and score a couple of goals.

Looking back to Chelsea, what was your perspective on the game?

It was tough, they kept the ball for a long, long time it almost seemed like they had an extra man sometimes but as a footballer you want to play in games like that. I was surprised how well they kept it and how their movement was. I played against Anelka in the France game so I kind of knew what to expect but you don't really get to many long balls and you don't head it too many times so I knew what to expect. Watching John play first hand was brilliant, he was probably the best defender I've played in a game with.

You must have been keeping an eye on the England captain in their defence.

Without doubt , I always try and learn and I've always watched him and he was good on the day. I got Anelka's shirt, we had a word at the end of the game and Parky got Terry's shirt and put it on. Even though we got beat we gave 100% but on the day they were alot better than us.

We're back to the Championship and you're back for the second time this season to your former club Peterborough United.

It's another massive game, not just for us but for them as well. They're struggling at the moment and need three points just as much as us. We need to get back in form, we haven't had a league win for a while. If we try and get some points on the road that would be great. Obviously I'm going back but I've already been back there and got abuse so I don't mind.

How was that game with Middlesbrough?

I got a bit of stick to be fair but that's part and parcel of football, it helps you raise your game and step it up a bit. I think it makes you give that extra little percent so I'll treat it like any ordinary game and try and get the three points.

The second sub-plot is obviously the manager's return to his former club.

Obviously with the gaffer the main focus will be on him and it may take the heat off me so he should get a good reception there for what he did for the football club, Two promotions was great and going from League Two to the Championship was always going  to be a massive step for them, I'm sure he'll want the three points as much as me and the rest of the boys do.

What did you enjoy most about your time down there?

I met some great people down there and they give me great footballing foundation after the ten years I spent there as a youth lad and I had some great times and met some great people. I have a lot to thank Barry Fry for for giving me a chance in football but the place has changed completely, I don't think there's one player there who was there when I was there, it's a completely different football club, Barry is the sole survivor.

Finally a win would be crucial going into the two home games against Ipswich and Barnsley.

I think so, we've got to try and get the points and build confidence, I think that's all that's lacking really, At Sheffield United we didn't do too bad, at Bristol City we condeded three poor goals but in open play we weren't too bad. As time goes on the Gaffer will express his ideas further and hopefully we'll take that on board and put that into practice.
