St. Ledger: 'An Honour And A Privilege'

Posted on: Sat 30 Jan 2010

Preston North End defender Sean St. Ledger has said it was an 'honour and a privilege' to captain the Lilywhites following the 2-0 win over Ipswich.

The centre-half took the captain's armband for the game after Callum Davidson was ruled out after concussion against Peterborough earlier in the week.

"It's a major honour and a privilege to captain this Club," said the stand-in skipper.

"I've taken it over a couple of times when Callum has gone off but I have never started the game as captain so it was a new experience for me and one I have thoroughly enjoyed.

"Winning 2-0 and keeping a clean sheet it couldn't have gone any better."

St. Ledger admitted that the first half had been played in difficult conditions with a frozen pitch and Ipswich's five man midfield stifling North End's creative instincts, but that didn't stop the manager giving them a good talking to at half-time.

St. Ledger said: "He had a bit of a go at us, told us it wasn't acceptable and we had to step things up and show a bit of tempo if we wanted to win the game, they were there to be beaten. We did that in the second half and it is nice to get a back-to-back win along with back-to-back clean sheets.

"The Gaffer said to me and Youl before the game to try and bring it out but it was tough because the half we were playing on in the first half was really frozen. It was really hard, it made things difficult and it was bobbly and you could see by some of the clearances that they were slashed a lot of the time and it made it a bit difficult.

"We got on with it and we stepped it up in the second half, Neill has attacked the ball for the first goal and what can you say about Danny's goal, it was a great finish."

Welbeck's great finish will be what grabs the headlines in Sunday's newspapers but the performance of the defence will be what pleased many of the North End coaching staff, St. Ledger even claimed he should have had a penalty in the second half.

"I thought I got to the ball and I thought he cleaned me out, I thought it was a clear cut penalty but the referee didn't seem to think so and he had a laugh about it. Sometimes decisions go for you and sometimes they don't but overall I think we are happy with the three points and a clean sheet.

"I love playing with Youl. He's a great organiser and you get everything which comes with that. Youl and I have played together a lot and I know what he is like and he knows what I am like, it's a pleasure to play with someone of that quality.

"Neill scored against his former boss and sometimes that happens, he attacked the ball great. I actually looked across to the linesman, sometimes free-kicks can be easily given for climbing and stuff like that. It was nice to see the referee and the linesman let it go on, let it carry on. Neill came on and defended really well."

The stand-in skipper reserved his last words of praise for the Manchester United loanee, explaining that the pacey striker has had a baptism of fire into Championship football.

"It is always difficult when a new player comes in and starts, obviously not playing in the Championship so much and playing against Peterborough who are one of the most direct teams in the league, it has probably opened his eyes a little bit.

"I think if you see some of the touches he had today you know that he is a class player, he's also got that other side to his game where he works hard, he has come from Manchester United and you wouldn't expect anything less.

"It was a great goal, it's only his second game and already the fans are singing his name and that shows what an impact he has made."
