Matt James is at Deepdale aiming to impress everyone and show he can compete at Championship level.

The Manchester United midfielder will go straight into Darren Ferguson's squad for the game against Sheffield United on Tuesday night and is eager to get started.

James said: "It's great coming from playing reserves to playing in the Championship, it's a massive step but I feel that I am ready for it and the manager and the management at Old Trafford feel that I am ready for it as well. I am just looking to impress everyone at Manchester United and we will take it from there.

"It's been brilliant for me getting the chance to come here. It's a great club, great fanbase and it's a great club to be at for a young lad, I'm coming away from Old Trafford but trying to succeed here so that I can go back to Old Trafford, it's going to be hard to push through there so hopefully I can come here and show what I can do."

James continues a fine tradition of players making the move from Old Trafford to Deepdale, great names like Charlton, Stiles and Beckham have all made the move and just recently Danny Welbeck also made the trip down that well worn path.

"There have been some great Manchester United players here, some who have managed the club as well," James said.

"With Welbeck coming here that will help me a lot with settling in and stuff but I am sure the players will make me feel welcome anyway. I've played with Danny for quite a while and I am looking forward to playing.

"My younger brother Reece has just signed his two-year scholarship to come here and be a full-time professional next year."

The midfielder admits that he turned down the advances of other Championship clubs to come to North End, but he's already had success at Deepdale, last year when he scored a stunning strike in the Lancashire Senior Cup for the Red Devils.

"Let's hope that I can score a few for Preston instead of against Preston," James smiled.

"That was a great day for me but I am a Preston player now so let's see what I can do for them. There's a few clubs shown an interest but from my point of view and the Gaffer's point of view this was the best club for me to be at. The Preston and the United connection is great but the football which we play is important and the fans here are great so it is a good move for me."
