"It Was Just One Of Those Games"

Cardiff City have already exacted a modicum of revenge for the 6-0 defeat last season by defeating North End by a goal to nil at the Cardiff City Stadium in December. Lonners was present in both matches and expects a different challenge this weekend.

"When we played them down there I think their manager was talking about that game but we've moved on now, these things happen, but it's a big game for both of us. They're near the top and we'll look at them closely before to prepare as we always do."

North End's number one pulled off a cracking penalty stop on the stroke of half-time in last season's game to preserve the 2-0 lead going into half-time and set the base for a half of football those present will never forget. And Lonergan revealed to the website that the save had been predicted beforehand

"It was one of those games where everytyhing went our wat, I'll probably never play in another of those games in my life, everything we hit went in and they didn't play particularly bad, especially in the first half. But for us everything we touched went in so I'd love another one game like that.

"Me and Rhodesy (Andy Rhodes) had had a little chat before the game and he'd said you're going to save a penalty to your right so it was a nice little thank you to him, the reaction at the end.

"It was unbelieveable because we went from losing at home to Blackpool to Doncaster, Cardiff, Birmingham and QPR and went into the Play-Offs by a goal and if you look back at it, it was that game where the goal mattered and took Cardiff out of the play-offs."

The players have had their first week without a midweek game since the middle of January and for the North End gloveman the break has come at a good time, and after a game, that for him North End were unlucky to come away with nothing from.

"I thought the Newcastle game was alright, we did alright, I think 3-0 was a bit unfair, I personally made a couple of good saves but the first goal was a fluke, the last one was one of those 90th minute goals that seems to happen when you're chasing the game, but there were alot of positives.

"Alot of the lads have been carrying niggles so it's been good to get time on the training ground because you're just playing games with strappings and painkilling injections so it's been good not to have a mid-week game I suppose."

Last time round at Deepdale North End battled out a goalless stalemate with Blackpool and Lonergan hopes the home support can get behind the team.

"It'll be good to get back to
Deepdale after a couple of games away, hopefully the pitch is good after we've not been on it for a couple of weeks so it should be good."

Sunday sees hundreds of runners doing their bit for a charity close to Lonergan's heart, the GEM appeal. Thousands of pounds has already been raised for the appeal and Lonners explained more about the condition his daughter suffers from.

"Our daughter Millie was diagnosed with PKU at only a few weeks old, during a routine blood test. We quickly learnt about the condition thanks to all the amazing staff at the Willink Unit, whose support has been continual ever since.

"At home we take Millie's blood once a week to check her levels are stable and Millie attends the Willink Unit every three months for a developmental check which includes a general health check, measuring and weighing plus dietary advice and support regarding introducing new foods to Millie's diet.

"We are truly grateful for all the help and support we receive and want to give something back. That is why we want to raise money and awareness for GEM Appeal, so they can help many more children in the future."

Lonners will be taking part in the one mile run on Sunday, for more details on the event please click here, to find out more and discover how you can donate click here.
