North End have taken up a one-year option on Wayne Henderson's contract for next season and have added a further option for another year.
The Republic of Ireland custodian is now fully recovered from the back injury which kept him out for over a year and has been in the squad for every single game this season, only kept out by the continued excellent form of Andy Lonergan.
Henderson, who has six Irish caps to his name, joined the Club from Brighton in the 2007 January transfer window, under Paul Simpson and went on to make five appearances at the end of that season, but a series of back problems meant he was ruled out early into the start of the next campaign.
After a lot of hard work Henderson got himself fully fit at the start of the season and has been pushing Lonergan since. Speaking about the extension manager Darren Ferguson told PNE.Com: "Wayne was coming to the end of his contract, so we had to look at it.
"He's done well in training; obviously he's not played as much football as he would have liked, but hopefully we have seen the end of his injuries with his back.
"He's trained really well and is pushing Andy [Lonergan] all the way. So, we've got him signed up to give him another year so we're all pleased."
Henderson and Lonergan have been the only ever-presents in the 18 this season and the North End boss is wary of not having a substitute keeper in the squad: "You can leave them off the bench, but it is taking a risk. I feel that you've got two good goalkeepers at the Club.
"Obviously everyone knows what Andy is all about; he's one of the top goalkeepers in the league. But Wayne is a different sort of goalkeeper, but we're still very pleased with him and we're pleased to get him signed up.
"He's trained since I have been here every day and played a few reserve games so he seems to have done well.
"It's is difficult to get two good goalkeepers so I'm pleased with the pair of them. I thought Andy was on Saturday was excellent and Wayne has done well in the games we have seen him in. He's trained well so yes it's important that he has signed."
