Born in Dumfries and a self-confessed fan of his hometown club, Queen of the South, Nicholson actually started his career coming up through the youth ranks of Glasgow Rangers.
The Scottish midfielder made just eight appearances in a five year spell at Ibrox before being snapped up by Dunfermline Athletic where he flourished under the management of Jimmy Calderwood.
Barry won the first of his three Scotland caps with the Pars and after five years at East End Park he followed Calderwood to Aberdeen in a £250,000 deal.
Nicholson became a key player for the Dons in the central midfield role, skippering Aberdeen and when it became clear that he wanted to leave on a Bosman, there was a host of clubs chasing his signature.
Preston won the race for Barry when he signed a two-year-deal with the Club in June 2008.
